The internal dialog you have with yourself, is AS real as your physical hands.
You can be stabbing yourself, and not acknowledging it because you are asleep to the regular, repetitive things you "think talk" to yourself about life, people and expectations.
You need to be the captain of your own ship. It becomes easier if you have no internal sidekicks attempting mutiny.
The thoughts that "enter" your mind seemingly from nowhere are entirely yours and yours to control.
Just remember, the strong convictions you have today, positive or negative have come about through repetitions of your mind.
You can control it. Not by force, but by shedding the light of your attention on it.
Say, You have a shitty thought. You just need to "see" that you had a shitty thought.
Over an over and eventually, every time you have a shitty thought, your Rational, sensible brain will associate and assassinate the mutiny within.
That book will help you realize what is a shitty thought. - The First and Last Freedom- Jiddu Krishnamurti
