Trust me dude, no links = no PR. Plus not all link checkers are accurate. If you have PR, you must have some links pointing to your site somewhere. Whether you built them or not.

It's true.
If Google's bots discover a page, even if the page has no incoming links, Google assigns the page a minimal Pagerank. This PR is different from the toolbar PR that we generally refer to. Such a page will have 0 toolbar PR - nothing more than that.
The whole PR system is based on reiterations. If pages don't have a minimum default PR, the PR of all pages will be 0, no matter how they are interlinked.

Backlinks are pretty much essential to any website with a Page-Ranking.

You are not right dude. Even if you can't see a backlink, doesn't mean that there isn't any. Check with a different backlink checker such as ahref which gives you more or less accurate result.

Ye but I dont think backlinks are always needed for a PR as little as 1... That isnt that difficult.

This is wildly inaccirate, I have a PR5 site with less than 600 total links (in Majestic).

No tool shows the accurate actual no of links to your site.
Many links are discarded or don't show up.
To have any PR you HAVE to have links, whether this will remain true in future only google knows.

Links are not the only thing that calculates pr now.
If you have legit traffic, social presence, quality content, and etc then your sites pr can go up even with very little backlinks.

No Backlinks = No PR
Soooooo lets say you don't agree with this, and you can earn PR with only "quality contents and social signals" blah blah, who the F$*@ cares?
The PR of your site has nothing to do with how well you rank.
Furthermore the only time PR matters is when you are trying to sell a site or sell some links.
However those of you with this "magic PR" that seems to appear out of nowhere, won't be able to do benefit from this, because apparently the "backlinks don't exist", so nobody will buy your site or links from you anyway.
So there is no point to this thread.
