Someone said this in another thread. Is this true? I've never seen a site with legit PR that didn't have good links.

No that is not true.

Links are the foundation of PR. Have you not read the equation for PageRank?

The calculations are based on weighted links.

Backlinks are pretty much essential to any website with a Page-Ranking.

I disagree on some of the comments above. I have an site built with quality contents and left it unlink, not even a link was done nor added the site to any SEs. After 6 mths or so, it got a PR1. So here with proven example, I beloeve you do not need links to get PR. But I agreed linking with authority high PR sites can increase PR rapidly.

So let me get this straight...if i have a pr 3 and build 74000 backlinks to it will be a pr 8

Nope. You need 2236418 PR1, 406621 PR2, 13442 PR4, 2444 PR5, 444 PR6, 81 PR7, 15 PR8, 3 PR9 links in addition to that.

PR metrics had its' best days way back in 2005 - 2006...

There are much more important tasks to focus on websites in 2013.

The higher PR is your backlink, the lesser you require to link back to you so as to promote your own PR. If you do not have backlink, it is still a possibility to grow your PR if you have substantial traffic visiting your site as Alexa Ranking is taken into consideration to compute your PR. More traffic, higher Alexa Ranking.

However, bear in mind that with more backlink, your site get advertise more often and to more places. Thus, this will help to bring you good organic traffic.

YOU didn't backlink it. That's not saying someone else didn't accidentally find it and linked to it, as they found it to be relevant.

the recent SEO tricks reveals that the likes are the foremost google is going to consider so keep up doing this

I suspected that too initially, but checked none link to me.

no ... you need 74000 links from PR3 websites to get PR8

Yes your saying wright but i have more then 100000 even though my Page Rank is 3 only it is not increasing . Tell me what i want to do ?

Every page generates its own PR and I assume a large site with visitors would create a fair amount of PageRank between pages but links from other sites is the best way to get PageRank.

Depends on the quality of the links. I got a PR 4 on a domain 2 months old with 150 SAPE links. Google often reduces PR on sites that might have a bad backlink profile.

Well its not that simple anyway. If youre 10 outgoing links sharing an actually pagerank 3, its only counting as 1/10 PR3 link ;-)
