Wow... School and College are very outdated :(

Open your mind: The most important things you learn at school/college are not in books or classrooms

ps:i also really like to know how the things works somethings like:why the sky is blue, why the sunset is orange

My skill, guile and outright shrewdness was learned in school. ask any of my classmate if i was 'smart' but ask any of them if we were put in a situation where it's either pass or go home and i bet you 95% of them would want to be with me.

Cheating/setting things up properly/getting the right connections/right solution to the problem is what i learned and yes i took up communication arts and we had tons of ridiculously hard projects that i either cheated or used my connections to get it done easily.

YES, skill and experience are learned through college. not to mention lifetime friends, experiences and relationships. GIRLS!

im not trying to bash college as im also trying to graduate, but its not like college gaurantees you to have a good income. you are still going to have to struggle in the rat race with lay offs, offshore outsourcing, and this crappy economy.

develope as many skills as possible to get success from any angle you can. college will be another weapon at your side, as well as learning to make money on your own. that way if you need to you CAN get jobs that require a degree which are better than minimum wage of course.

My confidence is based on what i've seen , what i've read and the few things i've experienced.

I'm not the spoiled American kid you have in mind. I know what i'm talking about.

Like i said, this is a new age, things are different.

kid,you have no idea...you don't even know how to finance a mortgage

Actually, college was the greatest time of my life. I paid for out of state tuition to FSU with pure spam money. Then I realized that I didn't want to sit on my computer all day long and decided to go to law school. Nothing beats the college experience.

Why do you keep missing the point. It seems to just float right past you....no offense, but you must be young.

Stay in school and work on your business. Learn stuff applicable to your business. And learn stuff just for the fun of it.

Learning is investing in yourself.

Learning how to learn is the point of school. You may think you have it all figured out, that you`ve learned all you can, or need to learn.

You wouldnt be unique, ALL young people think like that.

Learning how to learn? That sounds like some BS seminar that people get conned $1,000 into paying for. Except really they pay 10's of thousands of dollars because they end up in the fraud known as college.

College is a waste of a person's prime years. The stuff is so outdated as to be absurd. You are "learning" from a bunch of people who never did anything in their life other than take classes themselves.

College isn't the real world, it is the surreal life.

Bussing tables for a year will teach you a whole lot more than four years of schooling.

I was selling on ebay at 13, back before they required credit cards. So many businesses as a young kid I can't even count.

Schooling just inhibited my creativity, it didn't enrich my life at all. I'm glad I dropped out of college after two years, especially with all the morons who were at that school.

Any moron with half a brain can sign up for elance and make decent money writing. That is with no real skills required. Compare that to a 7$ an hour college graduate barista job.

Average salary for college grads is supposedly $46,000 a year. I saw businessweek come out with a figure for starting college graduates at $50,000 a year. I call BS on these figures, especially during a recession.

If you wrote 10,000 words a day 5 days a week, you could make more than the average college graduate, just off of freelance writing.

Anyone with a basic grasp of the English language can make more online than a college graduate.

And when you get good at internet marketing forget about it. The people making the real money are online. Where are all the big deals made? The hot new businesses, all online. That isn't going to change, in fact it is going to increase.

In just a few short years, internet advertising will surpass television advertising.

What you are getting at college is a 19th century education.

College doesn't guarantee you a thing except that you will lose $50,000 minimum to get a piece of paper and spend 4 years of the prime years of your life in boredom.

I am 24 and all I can say is chase your dreams man. Look I was always selling things my entire life. If you are naturally born blackhat or are great at marketing you have to do what you have to do.

A lot of people won't understand, but when you make it, they sure envy the hell out of you. And don't think you won't make it.

But this is exactly the problem. You obviously have no clue yet you are passing judgement!

Well I never applied myself at school, got average grades and had no plans to stay in education at all. I mean really, I was just like you guys about the whole thing. But I went along to an open day (not really sure why) and got convinced to sign up to a college course - still not believing I was really gonna stick at it. Unlike you American folk, here you leave school at the ripe old age of 16, go onto college until 18 (if you wish), then onto university until 21 (if you wish).

But hey, I not only enjoyed college and stuck with it, but I ended up being the top of my class and I went on to finish a degree. I tell you what, this is the same old argument everyone always has and the simple answer is...

"Your an idiot if you think education is a waste of time, you learn 'how to learn' (really you do), you learn about yourself in ways that would take you 20yrs to figure out otherwise, and it doesn't matter what you say about so-called 'teachers' you still learn from them 95% of the time whether you like to admit it or not"

However...

"If you think that a degree gets you anywhere in life, your also an idiot. Its a piece of paper that actually in the 'real world' means jack all. Why? because most of what you learn is 2 years behind what's used 'in the field' - most of the 'teachers' struggle to keep up to date and just because 'you know how to do something' doesn't mean 'you can do something' in the real world."

Take this forum for example, 100 people could say they are an IM guru based on all the wonderful things they read here, yet not once have they ever actually implemented any of it. Thats why graduates can loose jobs to 'uneducated' people who have spent the same number of years working from the bottom and learning on-the-job. Why? because so many employers would pick someone with 3/4 years experience in a field and no degree over a fresh graduate in a heartbeat. Sad but true.

This is the exact reason why those entering the medical profession must complete x number of years actually working and doing the job (e.g. doctor) in addition to their formal academic study, because there are just some things you cant learn from a book, in a classroom, or even from someone else.

So all-in-all it really comes down to what YOU make of it. For those that feel strongly that education is a waste of time, then it will be. For those who don't, it will be very beneficial. For me, im glad I went, it opened my mind in ways I never thought of, and allowed me to achieve things I never imagined I would. It feels a lifetime ago I went to university and I am actually considering going back to complete another two completely unrelated degree's, ideally one in theoretical astrophysics and the other in electronic/photonic engineering, or similar subjects. They have absolutely no bearing on a career or running my own business, will cost me thousands in tuition fee's, but its just something I want to do.

But to anyone who says at 16 that they know everything and dont need to stay on in education, well everyone else 10+ years or with an education will simply look at you in the same way that you would look at a 5 year old who said the same thing to you!
No offence, but its true... and YOU will be doing the same in 10+ years to a cocky 16 year old regardless of whether you got yourself an education or not. That's just the way life is :)

I agree that if you want to go to college to learn about a subject just for learnings sake and you are too lazy to check out a book at the library, then go spend your money.

Some of us are autodidacts, we learn on our own just fine. In fact, this is how things were done in America for a couple hundred years before organized schooling.

I did go to school, for two years. I was going to triple major in Biochemistry, Biology, and Chemistry since most of the classes overlap anyway. Definitely not easy material.

Had I graduated what would I be making $50,000? And working like some damn lab rat.

No thanks. I said screw that and went home.

I worked at ToysRUs for 7$ an hour (LOL) and started a business with $80. Two years later I had $90,000 worth of inventory. This is where I learned about the real world. The world where mommy and daddy aren't holding your dick. Where you actually have to pay bills, unlike the magic fairytale land of college where you get drunk and snort drugs, all the while learning about fancy theories and ideas which have no application to real life.

Some people like to snort coke, some like to get laid, others like learning in institutions. If going to college is your thing, then so be it. But if we are talking about making money, let us not kid ourselves.

Some people are just born to do business. Education of the structured kind won't help us to succeed, it just puts roadblocks in our path.

I felt like I should add my opinion here as a current senior in college. I have been working for myself for 3 years now. I am a double engineering major, Chemical and Computer Science. So I guess I figure on an average week I have 25 hours of class, 30 hours of homework and then spend plenty of hours working on IM. Do I think I could make it on my own without school? You bet. Do I regret 4 years of breaking my back here getting very good grades and spending $50,000 a year in tuition (Yes it's that high for me)? Not one bit.

Regardless of whether I pursue a job in the fields of my degrees I will appreciate having them. Why? Because I learned more science and business than most people ever will. Lets be honest, there are things you most likely can never do without a technical degree. Go design a process plant from the ground up including process equipment, operating conditions, modeling etc without having someone having taught you some of that. Will I necessarily do that after school, maybe not. But someone has to or else most of your consumer products will disappear.

There are many merits of college

Who cares about the money seriously? If it was all about the money, you'd be selling drugs, instead of talking dirty to men in order to get their credit card numbers, like a tool. College is an experience, both socially and emotionally, and one I would NEVER ever forget. I'd rather spend 4 years at college and make 50k a year rather than sit on my computer like a social reject and make 150k a year.

Sitting behind a computer, black hatting and jerking off to TGP sites all day is not the way to live life at all. College is a tool, if used correctly, will enable an individual to achieve anything. Goals and beliefs are the most biggest factor in whether or not you make it. Also, college was and still is one of the best social experiences. I can bet a lot of people off this site are socially awkward and would have a tough time working up the testicular fortitude to approach a girl at a party. THIS IS WHAT LIFE'S ABOUT! Enjoying your youth and walking away with memories instead of chatting with your online friends on AIM using acronyms.

Side note, if you plan on going to college in order to work a 9-5 job earning 40k a year than you my friend have no hopes of achieving anything. Set high fucking goals even though you might not believe you can do it. Trust me, you surprise yourself everyday.

To some people, making money is the meaning of life.

The meaning of life is different in everyone's perspective.

If you asked me, life is about perception.

If you were extremely happy sitting at your computer 24/7 making money, then good for you, as long as you are happy you have a good life.

Amen. At the same time, I'm in law school and find myself knowing that being a lawyer or rather, a DA is a hell of a lot more enjoyable and morally right than pretending to be a chick to make sure a guy signs up for your webcam.

Well not really. The world needs educated people to perform the vital functions of society. A lot of the knowledge we possess should be learned from authority. Just because you can be a free thinker, doesn't mean that you should shun all accepted wisdom. Some of it may well be correct - others obviously thought so. Good does come from education, and you find people coming out of it with a greater capacity to think.

But I agree on the 9-5 score. All my friends who went on to get jobs are unhappy with them in some measure. IM is a godsend. It's just a shame that in about 5 years time, Google's hiring of the best young minds in computer science will pay off and it'll find a way to shut down SEO for good. Until then, let's party.

I believe that and this BH stuff wont be around forever.....
That is just my opinion.

Like that other guy said. You're missing the point.
Go to school for the fact that you have the opportunity to go to school while most people don't. Go to school for the possible security it may provide some day, the respect you gain from others, and actually being globally accepted as a professional in a specific field.
I agree with not depending on college for your success as most people that go to college solely depend on their "jobs".
In the end, it all depends on what you do with what you have.

Yeah...

I am not only into IM.

And how can you say school is a backup ?

If no one gives job ?!?!? Because, i know programming too, I Can do freelancing atleast.

If no Internet, no one would be able to give job to educated ones also.

All Phd's are available for $10k a month.

Now if IM fails, i have lot another resources.. I do a lot of projects.

I earn any time even if i dont study. Study and money does not make sense. We much achieve something great.

Sorry to sound harsh but what the hell is "knowing good things"? Realize you may be able to make good money online but when it falls though you could be screwed. The more degrees you have the more guaranteed salary you have. Get a professional degree and you WILL be making 100K+ a year.

School really isn't THAT hard and serves as a great back-up plan.
