Being a newbie in IM, it is bit of a confusion for me to select wordpress or blogspot for a better start. I am a bit confused about the one which does good when it comes to SEO. Can anyone recommend which one to go on with?

    I would choose both.

I would also learn how to code some basic html.

As far as SEO goes, I can't imagine either one will really give you a boost. You have much more control over the site when it's on your own hosting, and in that situation, go with wordpress.

use blogger for the beginning if you never use hosting before . Then , while using a blogspot . start learning wordpress . use any free hosting that do not have ads like idhostinger to learn Wp . You will understand more and more .
if you're ready with Wp , go buy Domain + Choose any best hosting provider

btw , for SEO i'll be recommend to use Wp . :)

I thought the OP meant wordpress.com. Between that and blogspot.com there isn't much difference in SEO... IMO

Certainly a self hosted wordpress is the way to go.

I'd say if you have to choose just one go with Wordpress. Blogspot is fine it will help you in the future if you're comfortable with Wordpress though since it's a good choice for when you get to the point you're hosting your own sites. There is no self hosted Blogspot option.

Good luck. I find wordpress.com much better. It's more like 2013 while blogger is pretty much behind the curve in terms of customization. I also like WP because it has it's own stats.

Use both. Blogger has features to monetize your blog through adsense. And wordpress lets you have experience for your future projects.

i think you may use blogger to start with and to monetize it then you can go for your own domain, also it's more easier to post than wp.

I don't think you're even "allowed" to monetize a wordpress.com blog, unless it's changed lately. I started with blogger and it worked fine.

Obviously later on you should use a self-hosted wordpress blog.

On the same topic, do you guys recommend any reading material for WordPress? I have some coding and HTML experience but new to WordPress. I'm sure I could figure it out as I go along but if there's some n00b/intro stuff on WP that would be a cool read (or does it truly depend a ton on the theme?)

I start with blogger and after I've got approved by Adsense I start using Wordpress till now, wordpress is the most used platform on the web.

I recommend wordpress for you. Buy a domain with hosting and install wordpress from your Cpanel with few clicks. Good luck

There are WP training materials... Depends how new you are to internet. Personally, I figured out most of it in 1 day.

Stuff like plugins... You just need to track down a list so you know what to install.

    1) SEO plugin
    2) Google sitemaps plugin
    3) Contact Form
    4) Google Analytics plugin
    5) Akismet

Thats the basics. Any other plugin is gravy... it also slows your WP install down. So its always better to run light.

WP is really easy to use and muck around. Don't worry you won't kill it.

Also themes change functionality of WP a lot. I'd avoid complex themes like... Studiopress... Stick to simpler ones like elegant themes.
WooThemes... meh (they got lots rough edges around themes)

You might as well do both. They're both free. You could always have spun content on the other one and backlink to the other blog.
