You can get a 0.99$ domain for a year & hosting for about $10-15 a year. Compared to $29 a month for basic shopify it's a huge difference when starting out.
Not all free themes are completely crap, a few minor adjustments with custom css and you can have a decent looking theme. Some premium themes available to download on this site as well.
No, not totally free but no ongoing monthly costs which could make or break a newbie just starting out.
Regarding ssl, quite a few free options available these days and all the customer is interested in seeing is that the site is secure.

I know what you are saying. Agreed. For starting out, this is good enough. Judging by your posts, I am sure that you are a pro in this, so you know that $15 hosting plans are totally crap for e-commerce. They do not have guaranteed RAM/processor to begin with. Some of them do not even have proper file permissions, so your sites are vulnerable of getting hacked. Woocommerce does support shared hosting environment, but if your products have many attributes ( don't forget, WP was built for making blogs, not ecommerce sites) that starts overloading the server even with minimum amount of visits.
Then it comes about scaling up the server, which unfortunately isn't an option with most of the shared hosting providers. It's just like getting into serious crap that one won't be able to control later on.
To be frank, e-commerce needs investment and if someone is starting with $10, they should avoid e-commerce at all cost..
This is my opinion by the way.

Exactly this.
Plus shopify is expensive AF. Beginning of the year it was like $24,99 or something and their most expensive theme was about 80 bucks and now $180 dollar, wtf, plus every useful plugin has a monthly subscription too while WP has tons of free useful plugins.
If I was an expert HTML,CSS, PHP guy I would make shopify themes that pownes their most expensive themes and undercut everything.

I'm far from a pro, the only thing I do consider myself an expert in is being tight with money.
I came from a background with very little money and I know how to budget well. Ok maybe the $10-15 hosts are a stretch for ecommerce but migrating to a new host is not rocket science when you start getting traffic. Plenty of decent hosts available for $3-5 a month which is much less than shopify charges.
