When I worked in retaill 20 years ago, the manager used to put prices ending .99 or .98 so when customers paid with £1 coin or with a note he could give back small change which meant less hassle when counting up at the end, as the majority of the takings was in larger coins/notes.
But from a marketing/psychology point of view there are many theories and research.
A popular one I've found is people perceive a high price as having more value.
So if your trying to show your higher quality then increase your price.
