Why I Hate Internet Marketing

It's tough to say that Internet Marketing is bad when, it obviously works for some.

The problem that people really have with Internet Marketing is that it isn't easy enough for them and obvious always how to make money. I would bet those that those that know how to quickly gain ranks, #1 spots and high conversions are less likely to share those details to unless they then see something coming along that might change the way the game is played. The savy Internet Marketers don't just share everything as soon as they learn it, they test is and try it themselves.

Along with that, Internet Marketing can be both a passive and active business, it just depends on what you want to try and make money with; whether that is a product, service or through ads.

Finally, Internet Marketing is no different than owning your own business, it does take a plan, effort, consistency and flexibility to make it successful.

I look at the internet like the wild west - there are no rules, people are dirty and there is a gold rush going on. Some people will make money finding gold, some will make money selling shovels, some, like these so called gurus, will make money selling dreams and most will go home broke and hungry.

1. "That a website is a business." - This is common sense. If any idiot tells you they own a business because they started a wordpress blog, not only are they going to fail at IM, they have probably failed at everything they've done and will continue to do so. If anyone that read that post felt enlightened, do yourself a favor - unplug your computer, take the power cord, go to the bathroom and hang yourself from the shower rod - you are going to fail at life.

2. "Free Traffic" - The "rookies" flock to free traffic info because that what any online business venture needs whether it's an adsense or affiliate site, digital product or service. If any business, online or off, has to pay for every customer that comes in the door they are doing something wrong. I think you may have confused buying traffic with advertising. A few years ago when I started in IM (before I even knew what it was) I would post amazon products on a certain classified website. That was free traffic that paid my bills for a while before I realized it wasagainst the sites' TOS and I moved on to other things.

3."The 100% Digital Business" - "All the most successful online marketers sell physical products" - go check out the Apple app store or the Amazon kindle store to realize why this is wrong. It is true that people don't value digital products like they do physical ones. When I was in school I would download the required textbooks for about a 5th of the price as the physical book. As far as the business owner you know that converted all their products to digital and almost went bankrupt, well that just sounds like a poor business decision. Apparently they didn't know their market and were going to fail eventually. If a dentist decides to close up their office and perform dentistry online it's not the internets' fault that they fail.

Successful people are going to be successful. You have to play to your strengths, have a bit of talent and drive. Stephen Hawking is a great physicist, but he would make a horrible marathon
runner. He doesn't say that all marathons are a myth because he can't do it. If you can not make money online that just means it's not what you should be doing.

Internet marketing isn't a myth anymore than the stock market is. Just like IM there are investing "gurus" who will sell you an ebook for $5000 to show you how to trade your
way to millions. That doesn't mean the stock market isn't real. It just goes to show you that where there is money there are people selling dreams.

You can't really come to an IM forum and call IM a myth. There are plenty of people on this site that make a living from this. Aside from them there are even more people who are trying to find their own path to doing the same. By posting threads like this you use your failure to take away a little bit of hope that these people have. Head over to the thread about the homeless kid trying to make money in IM right now and tell him it's a myth. BHW should be a positive nurturing place, not a place to discourage people.

Being successful
at business be it offline or online requires expertise beyond
mere 'ideas'. Ideas are cheap, it's how you execute those
ideas into the atmosphere which will determine success or
failure.

Rarely does one person have everything that it takes to
succeed online or offline, both usually require teamwork, but not
just random teamwork. Focused teamwork executed by
experts engaged in every moving part of the operation.

No different than a pro sports team.

The low cost of entry into IM specifically in my opinion is
the major sour note, that and all of the get rich quick
hype that is rampant in the marketplace. The low
cost of entry of IM also represents a strong magnet
to the masses, nothing wrong with that.

As long as People have ambitions and the population continues to
turn, today's noobie IM failure may be tomorrows New IM
success story. Trial and error, learning from mistakes, falling
down and getting up. It's all a part of the journey of any
dedicated entrepreneur.

No reason at all to hate internet marketing, the OP presents
valid reasons for her viewpoint, yet having compassion and
awareness for those who are on their journey and experience
a degree of failure in IM might be a good idea.

I'm familiar with people who make great $$ strictly online
& offline. Opportunity exist on both sides.

actually, one of the main reasons i love internet marketing is that it allows for the possibility of creating "100% digital" business models that consist of nothing more than a website. to me it means low overhead, low maintenance, the ability to automate large portions of it with bots, freedom to work from anywhere, no clients to deal with.. basically completely minimizing the amount of work i have to do.

the inherently high volatility and transient nature of such a business is what offers the most potential for really really fast optimization and adaptability because there aren't any physical factors slowing it down. i can implement & test new ideas as soon as i think them up, with no startup costs.

while it's true that business models like this have a propensity to vanish into thin air overnight, they can also be re-created from scratch just as quickly. so as long as i have my brain, i'm not worried about going broke.

of course this kind of stuff isn't for everyone. some people hate internet marketing for those exact same reasons i just mentioned. ;)

gurus have a tendency to create unrealistic expectations, but being disillusioned by that certainly does not imply that you can't have the lifestyle you want.

Exactly... People ask me why I don't just start up a (physical) business of some kind, and I tell them: It's too much work and too much risk! Business owners often work 12+ hours a day, 7 days a week, for an entire year, and still fail. And what are they left with? Probably nothing but a mountain of debt. If I start up a monetized website that fails to turn a profit, what have I lost? $10.99 for the domain, $20 or so for a few months of hosting, and the time I spent creating or obtaining content and putting the site together. I'm on my 4th website right now. The first three failed to turn a profit at all. The 4th one has really taken off, and it has earned back all the money I spent on all four websites, and THEN some :D It's all profit from here on out.

It's true that IM can be unstable... But here's another way to look at it: how many people have to turn against you to turn off ALL of your income? For people who have a regular job, the answer is almost always "one." For the average IMer (those who adhere to the "don't put all your eggs in one basket" anyway) they would have to piss off several managers at affiliate networks and ad networks in order to cut off 100% of their income.

OP, I can see why someone might develop an attitude like that about IM, especially when you consider how often IM projects fail. But you just have to get up and try again. Digitial products DO sell; you just have to find the right one and match it up with the people who want to buy it. If digital products didn't sell, Clickbank would not exist and do millions of dollars in business per year.

I agree with a few parts, but the message as a whole only seems to be directed to people selling products. IM is more than just selling ebook, courses, and mentoring people.
