This form post might make some people mad, because it's like telling
them that Santa Clause isn't real.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about the commonalities
of the most successful online business's (I've had a chance
being a freelance copywriter to work in multiple 7 and 8 figure
    "online business".)

And believe it or not the most successful online marketers
don't really have an "online business". Most
of them have hard products, use direct mail, sell from the stage
(which is manual labor), do coaching. They merely use the
    internet as a tool.

I find it funny that the guys that sell how to make money on the
internet in their pajamas are actually getting on a plan and
flying across the country to teach people how to do that IN
    PERSON.

And truth be told after meeting a lot of them this IS their
    main source of income.

Here's the thing, while I stopped drinking the Guru kool aid
years ago I still see people buying into the dream of internet
    lifestyle.

The internet marketing mindset is detrimental to your success here
is some of the dangerous beliefs

    1. That a website is a business.

Wrong, your website is a tool and not a business. It is one form
of media. Smart business people try to use ALL forms of media
    print, direct mail, radio, etc.

    2. Free Traffic

This is a another dangerous. If you want rookies to flock to
you all you need to do is talk about a technique to get free
traffic. However I can tell you from experience that the experienced
marketers try to spend as much as possible.

Also you don't have a traffic problem you have a conversion
problem. If your conversions are good enough you can simply
buy traffic. There goes your traffic problem.

    3. The 100% Digital Business

All the most successful online marketers sell physical
products. Yes the idea of no inventor sounds appealing, but
people don't value digital products like they do physical. In
fact, I know of a info product business who converted all their
products to digital copy and their business went almost bankrupt
and the owner said he lost 2 million dollars because of it.

I could go on and on, the real question is have you fallen for
the internet marketing myth, if so I guarantee you can be making
alot more moolah if you start treating your business like a
    REAL business.

Do you agree, what's your thoughts?

I agree to some extent, but I think you're mistaken if you think the only "successful online marketers" are the ones going around selling shitty ebooks and doing seminars teaching people to make money.

The real big players are the ones behind the scenes that you have never heard of. They make the real money walking the walk. Those who whore themselves out give the perception that they are the most successful, but in reality that's a load of crap. Head over to Warrior Forum and read some of the stuff posted by these so called experts. Most of them haven't got a clue what they are talking about. All they know how to do is build a list and "create [rehashed] products".

Ah, the frustration of trying to understand how to make money online!

Is the glass half-full, or half-empty. Am I on the way up, or down.

Attitude, tenacity, and experience will provide the answer.

In the meantime I've got some content to add that's long overdue.

You missed one of the greatest reasons for never getting into this shit in the first place. The fact that your income is about as stable as the stock market. One day your on top of the world the next you can be scratching your head wondering wtf happen.

Or another great one is you can work to make money only to have a company screw you over and not pay, that's always been my fav reason to wanna go postal lol. Sure that can happen in the offline world too but you atleast know where that company is based and usually it's close enough to file suit against without much trouble instead of being across the country or the world.

He's not super man, he can be beat too, and if he is stopping you from making money then make your money elsewhere. Matt Cutts has never stopped one single penny of my income, and he won't, he can't. Just move past it. Every other thread in the lounge is talking about matt cutts. Damn, this guy wouldnt even be half as famous as he is if it wasn't for all of these threads.....

Not all successful products are physical products. Physical products definitely can sell well, but SaaS businesses do quite well, as do apps and other things.

Your business model will define success. I agree that the internet is a tool, and a website is a tool - it's only in very rare cases that all you need is a website. I'd say count your blessings if you have that.

That's very true. Uncertainties exist in every business, online or offline.

because of the low entry barrier into the online world, so many uneducated people van enter, the term Marketing is often misused as "marketing". Just like when u see job offers for "sales manager" which in reality is door-to-door knife selling and you only manage yourself and you get only what you sell.
The Marketing is a support for business, it is the bridge which connects provider and consumer.
The internet is another media for creating business presence.
The side effect is development of collateral businesses like web hosting, data backup etc...
don't confuse selling the shit with internet marketing.

I agree. I use the tools here to augment/enhance the business that I do offline. I do, however, know people that make a full-time living through online methods only. They are originators though, pyramid toppers of digital MLM programs, some second tier adult site owners who have licensed original content from studios that take the actual photos and film footage.

You are mostly correct though, few and far between TRUE, 100%, online ballers. Unless of course you count the super-mailers.... those guys still bankroll.

I worked with a publisher who recently moved their entire business online. No more books, only ebooks. Now the publisher has negative cash flow and cannot pay their employees. The "online business" is a dream, not a reality.

I make 10k-15k a month selling hard products (that I never have to touch). I couldn't even imagine trying to make my money with a zillion adsense sites or a million affiliate links. Just seems like too much to keep track of.

One thing for sure, Marketing online is the fastest way to reach the masses.

There has never been a time offline that can reach so many people so fast.

Get the formula right and you have the ability to scale it an make serious bank.

The other option is get a job and trade 5 days of your life for two days off.

A job is the ticket to BROKE and OLD!

The problem is most people not making it online are looking at the end result... the profit... the payoff and want to skip the process it takes to get there. It is hard work... that is why so many fail and get back into the job mentality.

If you can put off immediate gratification and put in the work, you can build a business online as long as you bring value to the consumer.

Become a producer and stop being a consumer, provide a solution to a problem of the masses and the money will come.

Try to take a shortcut, and be a selfish bastard that is only out for the money and you are spinning your wheels and back to flipping burgers.

    :)

actually, one of the main reasons i love internet marketing is that it allows for the possibility of creating "100% digital" business models that consist of nothing more than a website. to me it means low overhead, low maintenance, the ability to automate large portions of it with bots, freedom to work from anywhere, no clients to deal with.. basically completely minimizing the amount of work i have to do.

the inherently high volatility and transient nature of such a business is what offers the most potential for really really fast optimization and adaptability because there aren't any physical factors slowing it down. i can implement & test new ideas as soon as i think them up, with no startup costs.

while it's true that business models like this have a propensity to vanish into thin air overnight, they can also be re-created from scratch just as quickly. so as long as i have my brain, i'm not worried about going broke.

of course this kind of stuff isn't for everyone. some people hate internet marketing for those exact same reasons i just mentioned. ;)

gurus have a tendency to create unrealistic expectations, but being disillusioned by that certainly does not imply that you can't have the lifestyle you want.
