Why Google Search Console?

Alright guys really weird . . .

One day our pages are getting indexed by Google
and the next day it literally drops (From 600+ to 126+).

I'm talking about the Search Engine Console.

Has this ever happened to anyone?

I feel like something is wrong with our CMS or the host and Google might be having issues crawling our pages.

This apparently has been going on for weeks but I recently caught it.

I wouldn't care but it kind of explains why our traffic (For the past 8 months)
has just been steady (Camel humps in analytics). It's not going up or down.

Often this happens because of server errors, thin content, or duplicate content. It can also happen if your canonicals, URLs, HTTPS are being used in inconsistent manners... for example... your sitemap uses HTTP but your website and navigation use HTTPS... then technically the pages are indexed but just not under the URLs they were submitted by. Same issue also with inconsistent use of www.

Thanks for your reply Validseo - Do you think this can effect our rankings? Like I mentioned, our traffic just seems to be 'stuck'. It doesn't go high up or down. Could this be one of the causes?
 
Some of the issues I mentioned totally effect your rankings. Some don't. All depends what your issues end up being. Organic traffic tends to be volatile. If your organic traffic is fixed and non-bot then that is unusual in my opinion. The larger the scale the more volatility I would expect in organic traffic. If you are not filtering out bot traffic, then fixed traffic probably means most of your traffic is bot traffic.

Interesting insights and much appreciated. I'm sure we are not getting any crazy bot traffic but we do have sections that serve the German market, French and a few others. I wonder if it's something to do that (hreflang tag etc). Awesome info anyways. Thank you tons!

If you are consistently popular in all time zones that could hide a lot of the organic volatility... most of us are only popular in a few timezones.
 
Check your activities. It might be the reason why your traffic is stuck.
 
Thx for the replies but we are not doing anything weird and our webmaster tools status is just fine. I know for a fact it has something to do with us using hreflang tools with the cannonical tag. It's screwing our indexing which is hurting our traffic. Just need to figure out what it is.
 
Check under Google Index -> Index Status to see how many pages are indexed instead of using the sitemap page.

I've seen weird things on the sitemap page as well, like resubmitting a sitemap and suddenly it shows no urls indexed while under Index Status it shows that all pages are still indexed. It might have something to do with how your sitemaps are generated.
 
I am experiencing similar issue with one of my wp site. I've checked for dup content, sitemap is fine, there are no server related issues as far as I can tell. I am still trying to figure this out, but this could simply be an issue at googles side.

Are you using hreflang tags or cannonical urls?

No its a simple blog type site, canonicals are not necessary. So there are no dynamic url, everything is static.

Well you use cannonicals for two reason:

1. Let's say you wrote an article. You add the cannonical tag so if ANYONE else on the internet copies it, Google would know the original source which is your site. This way, you wont get dinged for Dupe content.

2. 2nd reason to use it is when you are using hreflang tags. Here the cannoical URL serves a similar purpose. The only difference is the dupe content is on your site (A page for US customers and very slightly different page for perhaps Australian customers).
