Why Facebook bought giphy

For example, just a few weeks ago before the pandemic, there was a get together, we were drinking and each chose a song. I said the name of a famous musician several times near a friend's phone. He doesn't like said musician.

When he got home he called me and said fuck you Barto, you hacked my home PC. I said why. He said his HOME youtube was suggesting the musician I was telling him about.

Or perhaps...

* you're viewing the videos at your house
* youtube knows from his phone location that he was at your house
* youtube deduced that while your friend doesn't have that musician as an interest, he has a friend who does like the musician
* youtube goes ans places said musician in your friends suggestions, since there's a higher chance for a click given the info above compared to a random suggestion.

They are more interested in user intent. In fact, all the data they collect is to understand demographics and user intent, so that they can server better ads. I think gifs give more info about user intent than emojis and stickers.

Google & Facebook have reached a point that they can serve ads based on what we think without even exactly looking for it. I'm waiting for facebook to launch a search engine. That'd be the ultimate face-off between the giants.

Can someone smart please calculate how valuable this data is to facebook? Maybe the purchase cost divided by every impression.

So OP you say Facebook bought some gif site to increase or evolve user tracking?

Could be. I'm sure geolocation of nearby phones is in the tracking mix.

But there are several reports about specific microphone tests, like the cat food one I mentioned.

All jokes aside, it's rather scary.

We can't go wrong learning the good OPSEC practices.
First for ourselves, but I'm sure it's going to be a very lucrative niche too

its a win for giphy, the founders getting a shit ton of money for it
and get to be recognized for selling their business to Facebook,
i also highly anticipate a hudge gif update for Facebook users.

Don't be FOOLISH, I use Android because I prefer it to IOS, it doesn't mean I can't buy an iPhone so shut the fuck up
It's okay tough guy. I'm sure you're very wealthy owning a poor mans phone.

Who said i dont have money to buy jr vip. There are a lot of people with even more posts than me that arent jr vip, yet they make a lot of money. And who said that people who aee using android are poor. Judging peoples success by their preferences lol.
Keep going you have a bright future ;)
Yes and those people don't have 1500 posts because they have better things to do. If they do have 1500 posts, they sure as hell threw the $97 at Jr VIP to say thanks to the forum instead of being greedy.

You can say whatever you want but these silicon valley companies are cheer psychopaths. Same goes to the "chinese sillicon valley" Tencent, Alibaba etc., where it is even more obvious. They want to control every aspect of the human life:
- Where you go
- Where you are
- Common patterns in your daily life (oh hell yes, Google sees if you spend 8hours per day in one specific place - they know your work place)
- Who you met
- How you spend your money
- What you write
- What pictures you share
- Your way of thinking (thanks to the search engine)
- Your fears, dreams etc.
- Your strengths, your weakness

This is pure madness. And once humans get connected to AI (this will happen) it will get even worse.

Just imagine a social score system (tested in China) to take EVERYTHING above into consideration on whats your score

RIP HUMANITY

My father had a saying: "Let the beasts eat everything, they will die of hunger when there's nothing else"

Might as well bundle your own data, and sell it to the highest bidder. Because companies like these are selling you without giving a cut.

lol

its the time for the rich to go shopping, sadly this is the world now.
