you post a project so you have authority to award a project. lol thats why you get called SIR by Indian bidders.
another example is your workplace. you address your senior or boss as SIR coz they have authority to kick you out of job.
No idea for Dear. i never used it in real life or online but its a way to show that they care for you as they getting business from you.

I read almost all the replies. I'm an Indian and I never use 'Dear' in my formal coomunication at all. I prefer greeting with 'Hello Sir' or just a simple 'Hi'. Yes, a lot of people use 'Dear' but IMO it's the correct usage. Many of the formal letters in India have Dear as the salutation used. It's used commonly probably just to show that even though we're working professionally but we treat you like a close friend. It's just a way to express that we're looking forward to work with you on a long term basis and we'll treat your work as our first priority and they care for you and your business.
I've been to US for official purpose for 6 months and I could feel the difference. It's just the cultural difference. If you don't like to be called 'Dear' just tell them and they won't repeat it.
I believe this is applicable everywhere. If you don't like something, then just say it and the other person will try not to repeat the same.

Culture+ language..we don't have any English word which conveys respect or affection,which is a part of Indian culture.

You guys need to grow up and become a international and not be a follower of any one culture,it limits yourself too much. The East has better things then the West and the West has better things then the East. But neither is overall superior then the other.

I meant don't limit yourself to one culture but do what you like best even if everyone else is doing something because its the "tradition". Take for example "traditional" clothing of a nation,why are they traditional and not something older or newer,like in Greece why don't they wear something that people were wearing several thousand years ago in Greece as their traditional clothing instead of something a few hundred years old. All those people are just followers that can't think for themselves. And the Scottish kilt was only made in the 1700's,its not something that people really wore along time ago. Just a Blackhatter with the idea of making money off nationalism. I could go on about every nation but it would take too long.

I think they try to mix up the two cultures which is impossible...noobs will learn with the time...I deal with both,western n eastern clients and freelancers.And I can easily switch my tone accordingly..this MUST be followed.You can't talk to an american in Indian way and vice versa
