Why are we losing to a competitor?

Our site shows stronger metrics in SEO tools, yet we’re behind in rankings and traffic. Our Moz Domain Authority (DA) and Semrush Authority Score (AS) are higher than our competitor’s, and we also have more backlinks and referring domains. However, we’re trailing in Organic Traffic and Organic Keywords, and our traffic is only about half of theirs. What could explain this gap, and how should we improve?

Thanks.

Higher rankings or more traffic are not always the direct results of stronger authority metrics. It's possible that your rival has more search intent-aligned on-page optimization, keyword targeting, and relevant content. Additionally, they may have better topical authority in important niches, fresher content, or stronger internal linking. Audit your keyword strategy, optimize for search intent, enhance the depth and freshness of your content, and bolster technical SEO (page speed, structure, and CTR) to close the gap. When it comes to backlinks or DA, quality and alignment frequently outperform quantity.

@lumian

High DA and many backlinks don’t always equal traffic. To improve rankings:
  1. Prioritize high-quality, relevant backlinks instead of just quantity.
  2. Analyze competitors’ keywords and fill content gaps.
  3. Optimize for AI/semantic visibility with structured, LLM-friendly content.
  4. Monitor user engagement and on-page factors like speed and CTR.
May I know what is your Niche about?

There are many other signals like content quality, user intent, UX data from analytics, social signals, etc.

The wide gap in traffic is simply because of low ranking. The top ranking sites always steal major chunk of traffic and the remaining ones have to fight for peanuts.

its local SEO for the trailers, We have accumulated a large number of comment links. Is this a disadvantage?

Comment links have been dead for years, you need to get backlinks from local directories or local backlinks or get some niche related backlinks for your local business.

Expand your keyword base as you may not rank in the top three for any of them, if you rank in the top ten for many of them you will get traffic.

Rank in the top 10 for 3 KWs is fine, ranking in the top 10 for 30 is finer.

We already have some keywords in the top 10 and the site consistently appears on page one, but we still lag behind competitors on those KWS. Should we prioritize building links specifically for the high-volume keywords, or direct links primarily to our homepage and product category pages?

I once lost to a smaller site because they nailed long-tail keywords and I was chasing only head terms

Your gap is that your website doesn't have a still recognised topical authority on the niche. Your competitor has. Second, as my advice will be to check the competitor's internal linking structure and if you can mimic or even better improve will be great considering the facts you say that you have already links and have rankings

Your competitor likely built stronger topical authority. Even with better DA or backlinks, Google values relevance, structure, and user engagement more. Check their internal linking, content depth, and freshness, then improve yours around main topics.

I recommend use links from websites that have real visitors these will help the most

Be clearer on this building links with guest blog posts or niche edit websites that have traffic?!
Look at the websites in your niches that are ranked and have visitors . Try to get from these post mentions these will work better than any artificial links build with softwares

If their site targets a niche or local audience better, they can outperform you even with lower authority. Adjust targeting accordingly.

I think, your competitor is likely ranking higher because their pages satisfy user intent and perform better on-page, not just off-page metrics.

Build backlinks for your important pages, like your service pages or location pages.

Even though your DA and Authority Score are higher, rankings and traffic depend more on keyword targeting, content quality, and relevance than raw metrics. Your competitor may cover more high-volume keywords, have stronger topical content clusters, or have better on-page optimization.

To close the gap, focus on:

- Running a keyword/content gap analysis against competitors
- Expanding and improving content around user intent
- Strengthening on-page SEO and internal linking
- Auditing technical SEO and user experience

Authority helps, but aligning content with search demand and intent is what drives traffic.

Yeah comment links can only hurt you these days

For local SEO you need actual human signals. Local check-ins, reviews and other signals by logged-in google accounts

Factors like internal linking, page structure, load speed, mobile-friendliness, and UX signals can significantly affect rankings and engagement.
