Why are we losing to a competitor?

Our site shows stronger metrics in SEO tools, yet we’re behind in rankings and traffic. Our Moz Domain Authority (DA) and Semrush Authority Score (AS) are higher than our competitor’s, and we also have more backlinks and referring domains. However, we’re trailing in Organic Traffic and Organic Keywords, and our traffic is only about half of theirs. What could explain this gap, and how should we improve?

There are many other signals like content quality, user intent, UX data from analytics, social signals, etc.

The wide gap in traffic is simply because of low ranking. The top ranking sites always steal major chunk of traffic and the remaining ones have to fight for peanuts.

Comment links have been dead for years, you need to get backlinks from local directories or local backlinks or get some niche related backlinks for your local business.

Expand your keyword base as you may not rank in the top three for any of them, if you rank in the top ten for many of them you will get traffic.

Rank in the top 10 for 3 KWs is fine, ranking in the top 10 for 30 is finer.

We already have some keywords in the top 10 and the site consistently appears on page one, but we still lag behind competitors on those KWS. Should we prioritize building links specifically for the high-volume keywords, or direct links primarily to our homepage and product category pages?

Your gap is that your website doesn't have a still recognised topical authority on the niche. Your competitor has. Second, as my advice will be to check the competitor's internal linking structure and if you can mimic or even better improve will be great considering the facts you say that you have already links and have rankings

Look at the websites in your niches that are ranked and have visitors . Try to get from these post mentions these will work better than any artificial links build with softwares

If their site targets a niche or local audience better, they can outperform you even with lower authority. Adjust targeting accordingly.

For local SEO you need actual human signals. Local check-ins, reviews and other signals by logged-in google accounts
