I've heard from some other influencers that setting their accounts to private has helped them grow.

I have an account with 300k followers, but when I tried it and tracked my numbers, I found that I was pretty much getting the same amount of follows only with the added headache of accepting hundreds of follows daily.

Does anyone know what the idea is with going private or if there is another reason for doing it?

Thanks!

Instagram has transformed into a sharing frenzy and setting their accounts to private forces people who follow their page and share their posts with their friends to follow as well even if they were only interested in one specific post that their friend just sent them. It's confusing at first, but after having a groupchat with close friends and constantly getting sent posts from an account you can't access. It forces you to follow or miss out.

Contents are not shared publicly. So only people who follow you can read your content. By going private it forces real followers who are interested in your contents to follow before they can read anything from your feed. Bot usually do not follow private account since follow/unfollow usually do not apply to private account.

That makes sense. Thanks!

It seems to work well with viral accounts as people are sharing the content like mad. I get so many DMs from friends sharing content from private account. Makes you want to follow them to see the content.

I want to try this but loosing analytics isnt worth it and re-connecting fb is such a bitch to do. If only you could be a private business.
