Hey all,

My homepage is ranking on the first page for a few keywords. However, the pages that I would want to be ranking for that keyword are not.

So my question is would it be better to rank specific pages or to rank the homepage?

Thanks!!

Homepages are notoriously bad at converting visitors into anything (sales, leads, subscribers, etc). It's better to rank a targeted page. Ranking the homepage is better than not ranking at all though :). Keep working at it.

Ahh very true!

Why is google ranking my homepage rather than my other page specially ranking for that keyword?

Also One of my specific pages were ranking on page one but out no where the ranking dropped off the face of the planet lol. It's still indexed just no where on the top page any ideas?

Thanks again!

Could be on page or off page factors. On page, I'd suggest looking at your internal linking. Is the keyword in the title of your homepage? Does your homepage have the target phrase on it? What's the quality of the page that you actually want ranked? Off page, you'd want to do a link analysis to see where the links are pointing and what the anchors look like. Chances are your homepage mentions the phrase, and your homepage has the highest link authority.

If the page is new, then I'd assume it's the Google dance. If the page has been around a long time, then perhaps something on page got screwed up, or you've been neg seo'd. If the site has been around a while, did you do anything like restructuring your page nav, sidebar nav, footer nav, or overall site structure?

If the site is new, then I wouldn't worry about it. Wait until the page settles in the SERPs then work from there. Just because you ended up on page 1, that doesn't mean your page deserved to be there. Once your rankings stabilize, then you'll know what to do.

I really appreciate your advice and help!

We did recently give our website a facelift and fixed a lot of issues that it had from before. The page has been around for a while but we did add more content, internal linking, external linking as well as adding multi media. Ill be doing some outreaching and trying to send some HQ backlinks back to the page to see if it helps.

Again thanks!

In my view, you can optimize the specific inner pages with the preferred keywords. Also you must change the page with based on conversion. Must include the keywords on title tags , meta tags & keyword optimization is important

It is all about the conversion.

There is no simple answer as each case can be unique. Pretty much it is good idea to run some short split tests through paid ads, to see which page has better conversion for specific keywords. Then you can decide based on the result which page you should push for a specific keywords.

In my opinion it's better to rank a targeted page. Anw, ranking the homepage is better than nothing. Keep doing off-page SEO. Focus on target page!

Both,

It's best to rank the homepage and other pages for your website as well such as blogs and the about us page.

Hope this helps
