I know there are several tools to aid in keyword research such as keywordtool.io, keyword finder, I believe Ahrefs has a section as well, and they all offer statistics for each keyword like the number of times the keyword is searched per month, but where do these third parties get the data from? As far as I know, all data regarding search behavior is private, or does Google have a public API? Am I missing something?

I think they track all the data from Google and they modify it by their own calculation.

Google's goal is to shut off all SEO data sources.

Thanks for your answer, but what I meant is, for example, in external services like keywordtool.io you see how many searches per month a keyword has; but as far as I know, offcially the only one that knows how many times a keyword has been searched is google, where are these companies getting their data?

Nevermind, I just read that google indeed maintains an official, public API for Adwords which includes keywords and search volume.
