Also, don't start with crappy backlinks (article directories, mass blog comments, etc,) Focus on PBNs and guest posts from quality websites (relevant sites in your niche that get organic traffic from google) or web 2.0s but you need to create quality content for the web 2.0s.

Ya or just buy some foundational links. Those are always safe too, as long as you don't buy massive quantities.
Some of the BSTs here sell massive quantities. I try to find the BST with the smallest quantity as that's the most natural. There's nothing natural about building 400 links in the first month. 90% of the sellers thinks more is better but that's just not the case.

web 2.0s are safe, but not powerful enough to improve rankings on their own, early stage or not.
But anchor diversification is not restricted to web 2.0s only. You can diversify your anchor text with all backlinks, not just web 2.0s.

If you were to ask me, the best time to create backlinks is when your website is complete.
I’m talking about at least 50 articles up—and these shouldn’t be just short articles or fairly shallow pieces of content.
These must be comprehensive, authoritative, and highly engaging pieces of content.
In other words, put your best foot forward.
Then, and only then, should you start thinking about getting backlinks.
Don’t build backlinks, earn them instead
I can’t emphasize this enough: if you are thinking of getting backlinks, get them the right way.
Don’t just go to a website, fill out a form, and get an instant backlink—those kinds of links are not going to help you.
In fact, in many cases, these easy links can actually hurt you.
Your best bet is to develop real relationships in your niche with other bloggers.
You should also work double time to build a solid brand.
Once you have an organic community of people that come back to your website and consider it as a credible source of information, you will start earning backlinks organically.
That’s the name of the game!
Given how finicky and sensitive Google has become, you don’t want to be that guy who makes one false step to see his traffic drop 80%—I’ve seen this happen too many times on this forum and others.
I know a lot of people are very heavy on backlinks, but it’s only a matter of time until its relative value decreases compared to other ranking signals.
At the end of the day, it’s all about user value and search intent.
Focus on those and you only have yourself to thank later.

I guess it boils down to quality links. When a new site gets picked up by one major news outlet, it’ll receive a ton of other natural quality back links and it’ll rank highly on the serps.

Yes, I see that a lot with some of the startups I work with. When they raise a few million dollars they get a lot of coverage.
