... how much time do you tend to put into finding things out, research, etc? Do you put quite a bit of time into that, or do you tend to leap in once you come up with a good idea?

Analysis and set-up take me a lot (weeks) because I want to do it right the first time.
But after everything is set up I can spend just a few hours a day on a project.
That's why I can't have many projects.

There’s not a set timeframe for research. You’re looking for answers to questions. Some answers you won’t even get until you do a test run and figure out you’ve got to make a few adjustments.

Even keyword research, the base for a lot of research, is something that has a random timeframe depending on if you’re looking for a topic set of keywords, a micro niche, and or just low competition ez keywords with low search volume.

TL;DR: Things take time.

You get an 80-90% return on your time with planning. So be sure to do some. But being able to plan out more and better only comes with practice, so everyone's answer will vary to their experience.

I have different approaches, depending on what information I find out during research. Sometimes I shoot the gun right away with an idea, other times I wait, and just buy the domain name.

I would say that before starting a site it would take a week for research

There isn't some definite time range for this, but if you really want to be successful with your project and achieve a lot, you'll need to do thorough research which will probably take you around two to three weeks to be done properly. Marketing strategies are usually being made within the period of one month as here it's necessary to put attention on a lot of different things at once, but this is really a key to success eventually, so you have to be prepared to put a lot of energy in the research process.
