I’ve seen some sites remove guest posts after a few months, even after being indexed and ranking well.
How do you handle this?
Do you add terms in advance, build relationships, or just focus on trusted publishers?

You really want to check the site and make sure it is not just a link farm as many guest posts sites are exactly that.

That’s a good point I’ve noticed the same issue lately. What’s worked best for me is building relationships with site owners instead of one-time guest posts. A bit of ongoing communication or content exchange usually keeps links live much longer. Trusted publishers definitely make a difference.
 
Yes, even with bigger name domains, permanency can be an editor's decision away from being taken away. Best remedy is to do a backup of the content around for reposting purposes, and a log of where and when the post was published. It can be delightful to check the log a few months/years later, to find that the post or link is still up, as only then do you really know placement on that site means it will stay there.

It is impossible. This is kind of understood at the time of making the deal.
 
If it's a free guest post, then you've less to do, it can be taken down anytime.

If you're paying for the link, then you should work with trusted publishers, focus on the admins only, and set a clear term before the deal.

Keep all the paid links in a file, and check them 2 to 3 times a year, and if a link is dead, you can easily talk to the publisher.

Some don't drop the link, but add nofollow after some time.
