whats the best odesk, elance, freelancer, other?

From my experience:
Top Quality: Elance, sometimes also liveperson
Diry Stuff: vWorker (fka RAC)
Somehow I never got warm with oDesk. But thats probably because I have been on Rac for ages (150+ projects) and dislike the pay-per-time idea a bit.

I am a well respected designer here on BHW, but I cannot hardly find any work on the other sites mentioned because I cannot compete with the indians prices.

I have nothing against them but I have always heard nothing but bad things about them. So people would rather get crap work for less money then pay me a few extra dollars and get quality work.

2. Clearly mention that coder must stick with deadline, that he can set by himself. If you request a draft for a website, mention that it must be delivered to you 2-3 days after the project was started. If any deadline is over you must warn the coder beforehand and further declare the project as failed immediately after deadline passed. Do not go into any deals where you extend it !

You will many times find people acting as a company there but in fact they have no clue and you give them some info and then they run to somebody else that does the actual job.

3. They want to communicate out of the PM's of the freelancer system. You can do so but always post the main points in the official PM

Hiring on BHW is the same thing, if not worse. If you hire here only go for people with enuff itrader and do not pay the whole amount upfront. hope that helps

I've heard these stories with Indian freelancers all the time. You are not the first one and last one with Indian freelancers. That's why Filipinos are replacing Indians now. Even so, be careful when dealing with Filipinos, too. Always testing, testing, testing. There are good ones out there if you can find them. No racist at all, just plain cold facts. I personally don't hire Indians. Just my preference.

I like guru.com. They don't charge any fees to employers. oDesk charges 10% to employers for every project with lousy service. elance is almost a fraud. They don't tell you they would charge you $10 account activation fees when you sign up. Only when you hit sign up button, binggo, you'll see $10 will charge to your credit card to show your seriousness doing business on elance!!!
