What to do with a brand new domain?

I have a main site and a new (.design) domain which I got for free. Is there anything productive I can use the fresh domain for, given that the name is in the same niche as my main site.

It will depend on your niche i guess.
You may use it as a completly different site or use it to redirect other links..

It's totally your decision. If you will like to develop the new site related to designing then go with that. Else you can develop you own blog related to it. It's upto you.

OR

You can add it as alias under another domain so it will become one more domain to advertise your site.

I'd say don't use it.

these silly domains just sounds like spam.

Yeah if there were any clever not too work-intensive uses I would do something with it, but I can't come up with anything and don't like that its not a .com domain. Thanks for all your replies.

Don't waste your time on it, just focus on the main thing.

As others have said, keep your attention on your main site. It will just be a distraction.
