What the hell is up with Wordpress blogs and HostGator?

I am thinking this is a HostGator issue because I do not have this issue with any other hosting company and WordPress

I just logged into HG and the blogs I have there work fine, albeit sometimes they are quite slow when doing the "edit post" function.

Same here...mine also takes ages to load the wp-admin login page also.

If you have a /wp-signup.php, then you are using Wordpress MU

Also, on your dashboard, it will show the version of Wordpress under the "Right Now" section. If it says Wordpress MU 2.9.2, then you are running MU..

My Blogs (not autoblogs) are working amazingly with HG I tried many other hosting but none is like HG.. the other would scream after u download 12 plugins or so.

I've read through this entire thread & have tried everything you've post so far ken, but my admin area is still really slow. Any ideas how to fix this?

My fixes are targeted at resolving database issues, however admin slowness is a little different, as it could be related to connection speed amongst other things. Since the dashboard relies heavily on javascript, you can enable gears (Tools->Tools) which will help a lot. Plus, try a different browser such as Chrome, if you are not already using it.

A few more things to try. Hope they help.

I'll try it, thanks for the tip - where can I find the gears option to do this? Somewhere in my admin area I assume?

I think HG support is rubbish to be honest. I'm still getting database errors...had to remove Ken's script after it fired back a pile of errors at me (thanks for your efforts though Ken) and all I get from HG is that they cannot recreate the error...even though I sent them a laboriously slow screen video showing the problems I was having!!

I reckon they know full well that there's a problem but are just trying to brush people aside as if we were idiots!! :hmmm:

Their tech support is a bit interesting to say the least, and the response you get from them is pretty much textbook when it comes to troubleshooting.. Always deny responsibility.

After elevating my issue enough, I was in contact with one of the higher ranking IT people there, and they finally admitted to me that they over subscribe their shared servers, and myaql (which is hosted on the same system) is overloaded, plus they are unable to tweak it without affecting the other VMs, so they simply deny any wrong doing.

As for the database errors, what exactly where you getting? If you used my code unmodified, there is nothing in it that could error, that is outside of the normal code offered by wordpress. Note: If you upgrade to a release newer than 2.9.2, then you will need to delete the db.php file as it will need to be updated for the new version. (this includes the 3.x beta).
