What should I do?

Sorry if this is the wrong section, I had no idea where to put this.

I have a site where people have to fill out a form which is then handled by a PHP script.

Lately, my site has been constantly going down (501 resource limit reached). I contacted my host and they upgraded me to 'Business SSD'. It is no longer going down, but when you complete the form, it simply loads forever and doesn't return the page it's supposed to. My CPU limit is at about 94% continuously.

My host has advised me to upgrade to one of their dedicated servers, which are generally in the field of £XXX/month. This is just a small site, I would only spend that much on hosting for large enterprises.

I am with Namecheap hosting.

What do you think I should do? I am currently earning half the revenue I previously was.

If your revenue from the site is £XXXXX/month then you can go for £XXX/month dedicated proxy for sure.

Unfortunately my revenue from the site isn't £XXXXX/month
 
First of all if you are worried about revenue then y need to pay for that and buy a dedicated server with company who can provide you best support at any time so the website will be up every time and more users can visit your website at same time not issue of getting slower the site.

when they upgraded your plan did they move you to a new server and IP? If so check your script it might be trying to talk to the old set up if links were done by IP address instead of domain name.

If it was working before with no lag just crashing then it should be working now and not taking awhile to load. I would not think you need a dedicated server at this time.

You might be better off on a VPS server instead of a shared host.

But the issue could be within the code of your script kind of hard to say without seeing it.
 
You're prolly going to need to upgrade to a VPS.
 
Something's very very wrong with your form. It's probably in an endless loop.

I will look into moving to a VPS. I get about 3-8 thousand pageviews per day with probably half resulting in people submitting the form. How powerful a VPS would I need?
 
It's very likely that your code needs optimization more than your hosting plan needs upgrading. Look into that first if you have a way to.
 
How big are these two files?

$used_file = 'used.txt';
$codes_file = 'codes.txt';
 
I would not look for dedicated server for such simple task, even if the filesize are over 10MB you should be ok on VPS hosting which of course is way cheaper than dedi.
Athu I cant see any server resources diff's between their cheap plan and business plan.
Most likely they have low phpmem / upload size limits on their shared plans and that cause the issue.
Feel free to contact me if you would like to test it under our VPS plans prior switching.
 
if you are using wordpress or some other CMS and have some plugins installed on it, then try disabling them and recheck your site, CPU going to 94% means there must be some problem with your script or CMS .
it would be good if you can hire some expert who can audit your site and can fix the problem with your script.
Another thing, contact your hosting provider and ask them to check if your site is getting attacked by any kind of bots or something as some time malicious traffic can also create 508 error of resource limit reached and can also result in high CPU usage.

you definitely do not need a dedicated server.

however it would be good if you can give us your traffic stats, so we can give you better advice if you need an upgrade on your hosting
 
You need to find a hosting provider with cheaper prices. Simple as that.
