Hii guys, I read a lot of things on what should be done to increase SEO, I'm new to this stuff, so I want to ask what not to do, as there is a lot of old information on SEO on the internet and I read on the panda-penquin update and stuff.

I'm new to SEO and my main concern is what I shouldn't be doing?

Like for example, I read keyword stuffing is bad, how do I know I crossed the line with keyword placement? etc

Do not make all of your links have the same anchor text. For example, if every link pointing to your site said "buy dog biscuits" and you were selling dog biscuits on your site, you'll get Penguin slapped.

Go for a "natural" anchor text diversity (I know right? Artificially creating a "natural" anchor text diversity) - include the name of your website, the raw URL of the website and generic terms like "click here" when creating backlinks.

    Dothisup,

Search engine optimization is a very big world and there are many things to learn however the best place to start would be with target keywords for your website. Choose the keywords and their variations that you want to include so searchers can find your content.

You will want to include these keywords in the content on your website as well as the architecture of the website (meta tags, alt tags, and titles). Choose keywords that are important to the product or service you are marketing and build a page around each one. There are certain characteristics as to how you do this such as keyword density in website copy and the number of relevant keywords you should include in meta tags (do not include keywords in the keyword meta tag).

Another thing you can do to start is learn about what white hat and black hat SEO are and their differences. Depending on what you want to accomplish, there are some tactics that may not be good to practice.

The tasks mentioned above are known as internal or onsite SEO and are related to website architecture that you have direct control over. Another aspect is offsite SEO which can include creation of external web properties that contain target keywords, article marketing and syndication, optimization of video, document sharing, link building and a number of other tactics.

The line to cross into what not to do is typically very fine. Some things that would be considered ok can quickly become black hat if you do them too much or in a way that is deceptive to users. Your best bet is to design for your users. Write good content and follow good advice that you get and you should be ok.

It would also be wise to follow industry leaders in SEO to help guide you to good information on the subject. Keep up to date on industry news by reading the blogs and following the social media accounts of industry leaders. SEOMoz is a good one along with @randfish - Rand Fishkin the organization's founder. Another good resource is SearchEngineLand.com and you could follow @DannySullivan - Danny Sullivan, the website's Editor. Matt Cutts -- @mattcutts who is head of the webspam team at Google is another great resource.

I think the title is one of the most critical things to get right. I usually do a Google search for my draft title to see what the competition for that topic is. I very often then will tweak the title to try to get my share of those searchers.

Another important and oft neglected item is the meta description. This is often absent, or not unique or inappropriate. Since it can influence the snippet that the search engine shows in the SERP, you should think of one that is most likely to attract the click of the keyword searcher.

Yes, meta description is one of the many important factors that most webmaster have overlooked in their SEO campaigns. Keywords in Meta description doesn't affect much with the rankings. What's important is you create a description that is engaging. A description that you thing will entice searchers to click on your link title.

Do not pay for 10,000 backlinks to your main site. You might be tempted later down your SEO career and you will find out that this is not what you should be doing haha. You should investigate Tiering before you go an purchase thousands of backlinks etc.

Also, be careful with what you might consider buying at fiverr. A lot of people have gigs about SEO that may do a LOT more damage then good.

    Hope that helps :)

I would take issue with nearly any auto submission software. If there is no editorial process by the person who owns the site, there is little value in the links.

When it comes to keyword stuffing, the main way that I look to avoid it is simply judging from how readable the content is. Simple truth is that overuse of keywords will make the content hard to read, but if you want to really quantify it you'd be looking at not much more than 2-3% KW density. I would also look to get as many different types of backlinks as possible - from wikis to Web 2.0, to blog commenting, forums and so on - and to make them relevant to your site. Also I agree with others; a few primers on white and black hat SEO can give you ideas.

Paid links can be, but link popularity campaign should be slowly & gradual. For example, if your site is PR0, and it has no PR0-PR1 links, purchase at least a 300 PR0-PR1 links for it before you start buying higher PR links. Then purchase several PR1-PR3 links. A week or two later purchase a few more PR2-PR3 links. A week or two later purchase a few more PR3-PR4 links. A few more weeks later purchase a few more PR3-PR4 links. And only then you can slowly start to purchase PR5 links for it. And even later - PR6 links. Buying links in this way looks natural to Google

Your post is interesting and new to me. Actually there are a lot of things not to be done in SEO. I got to say something, if one hit to your site because you have done something right, it is just as easy for me to leave because you have done something wrong. Both actions will have cost you money. So think about what you would like me to do when one arrive and then make it easy. It's up to your decision.

    Avoid following things in SEO

!)choosing a title that has no relation to the content on the page.
    2)Avoid Keyword Stuffing
3)filling the description with only keywords
4)using generic descriptions like "This is a webpage" or "Page is about tickets, flights"
5)using same title or description meta tag across all of your site's pages.
6)using lengthy URLs with unnecessary parameters and session IDs
7)allowing your 404 pages to be indexed in search engines8)choosing generic page names like "page1.html"
9)creating complex webs of navigation links, e.g. linking every page on your site
    to every other page.
10)Cloaking (showing content to search engines that is different than what you show to real visitors).
