I can get inc.com, lifehack.org, wsj.com or around 10 medium-sized sites for the same price. Which ones would be better to have, they are all do-follow

I would go with the one that is harder to get backlinks from. I will also look into which one has a better TF and CF/TF ratio.
 
Compare each link (guest post?)'s TF/CF, PA, DA, Spam score, outbound links and the referring domains and according to your comparison select the best and most affordable one(s).
 
Multiple combination of quality backlinks are essential to rank & increase traffic of the website.
 
These all are the high reputed sites and getting a strong backlink from any of them will be really great but as other members said relevant backlink is much better and saver.

So just go and get a relevant backlink with a reelvant site.

Spam free diversity backlinks are better to have
 
In the long game, magazine links like inc.com are gold but you would get more ranking
power out of 10 links done correctly short term.
