What is your biggest problem with building your email list?

I would like for my website to send an email to people when i reply to their tickers for example, but i dont want my host to suspend me or my domain to be marked as spam or something by the various email platforms.

Its unfortunate really, bcuz email is powerful, but i never managed to figure out how to use it consistently and with no issues. Not that i tried too hard, but eh.

I was using POP3 until very recently, I just shifted to SendGrid a lil while back.
For newsletters etc I prefer MailPoet. I like to set it up on a subdomain so its a little separate from the main install, but I compartmentalize my wp installs like that all the time anyway.
If you're not using WP...then I have no idea. I remember PHPList being a decent free one you can install from CPanel.

I know a thing or two about email lists. First off, you shouldnt be sending large emails through your host. If you are using that free control panel email on some sites like godaddy then dont. Its crap. Plus you dont even want to use your regular domain let alone your host as you risk it being flagged due to people clicking on spam. If you have less than 2k people then you can use mailchimp for free. If you go above that there are cheaper alternatives. I would make a subdomain so if your website is cheapstuff.com then your subdomain can be a.cheapstuff.com. Nothing needs to be there but if you send an email from [email protected] and you mess up or its perceived poorly it wont give problems to your regular email, [email protected]

But before you do all this stuff you need to get your spf, dkim and dmarc stuff straight with your DNS. If you dont know what any of those words mean then you better google it. You will go to your host and change the DNS so that your host recognizes your email from mailchimp or whatever is actually you. You will need to make some changes to mailchimp as well.

If people click the spam button when you get your email a spam report is filed telling your email provider and the world that you are unreputable. Thats the same thing if you have lots of bounces. And if that happens the emails to people that like you and new people will also go to the spam folder. No Bueno. Gmail doesnt report you. They just screw you quietly. So remember if you get a few spam reports you probably get more.


If you havent emailed your list for a long time they might think you are a spammer...heres a little tip...if you want to be extra careful then make unsubscribing really simple. You may lose some people but thats better than going to the spam folder.
