What is topical authority? How to increase it?

IMO topical has replaced keyword density, so think if you're wanting to rank for real estate, you'll want to talk about property prices, current market rates and inspection results etc (not 100% on that - from top of my head but keep topic) and linking to authorities on subject for EEAT ( like others have said) - people can copy your content sure, but if you're consistent and valuable to the topic. You'll win.

Yep, topical authority is real, Google wants to see you as an expert in your niche. Blog posts help a lot. If you're a digital agency focused on sales, writing detailed content around sales funnels, lead gen, CRO, cold outreach, etc., builds that authority.

Backlinks still matter, but content shows Google what you're an expert in. So, your post blogs on those topics & it strengthens your niche relevance and boosts rankings. Think siloed content clusters + internal links and helps to you.

Note: Yes, topical authority is real. Backlinks + strong content around your niche = trust + rankings. Write those blogs for people helping.

Lets say I have a digital agency focusing on sales.

I heard that Google needs to see me as an authority - and so that I should write blog posts on that topic to increase Topical authority. Does it even exist?

How to increase it? I understand backlinks game, but do I need to write blog posts also on this topic? Would that help me?
The digital agency website should have lot of positive reviews on Google. Even if you are buying it, you should be creating it with perfection so that Google does not detect it as paid reviews.

"Great question! Building topical authority through quality blog content definitely supports long-term SEO.

Topic authority is a real concept in SEO, even though Google doesn’t explicitly use the term. It refers to a website or author being recognized as a trustworthy and knowledgeable source on a particular topic or field. Google’s algorithm, especially after algorithm updates like EAT, prioritizes content from sources that demonstrate deep knowledge and relevance on a topic. This helps your site rank higher for relevant queries. Google’s ranking system emphasizes content quality, relevance, and expertise. Topic authority fits in with this, and it shows Google that your site consistently provides valuable, in-depth content on a specific topic. For example, a website with comprehensive, well-researched articles on “digital marketing” is more likely to rank for relevant keywords than a website with fragmented, unrelated content. Posts on X and SEO blogs often discuss topic authority as a strategy to build trust and relevance with search engines. In short, writing blog posts is the cornerstone of building topic authority. Combine it with strategic backlinks, internal links, and ongoing expertise to maximize your impact.

Yeah, topical authority is 100% a real thing — and it’s becoming more important lately, especially with how Google’s leaning into EEAT and AI-driven summaries.

Basically, topical authority means Google sees your site as a legit expert in a specific niche. If you're running a digital agency focused on sales, then yeah, publishing content around different angles of sales, digital strategies, conversion tactics, sales funnels, lead gen, etc., helps big time.

It's not just about stuffing keywords though. It’s more like — are you covering the topic from all angles? Think of it like building a library. One blog post about “sales strategies” won’t cut it. But 20+ solid posts covering beginner tips, advanced tactics, tools, case studies, mistakes to avoid, niche breakdowns, and even client Q&As — that’s where you start building that authority.

Backlinks still matter, no doubt. But if you’ve only got links and no content to back it up, you're not seen as a "real" source. Google wants both — authority from links and depth from content.

So yep, writing blog posts on your topic does help. Just make sure they’re useful, tight, and not generic fluff.

Hope that clears it up.

Yes, writing articles about your field helps you be perceived as an authority but only if it’s done right: relevant, concrete, and demonstrative. Combine it with other signals like backlinks, proof of experience, and public profiles.

topical authority is like showing google you know a lot about one subject.
you build it by posting lots of related content around one niche, linking between them, and keeping stuff updated.
basically go deep, not wide.

Topical authority means how trustworthy and knowledgeable your website is on a specific subject.

To increase it :
  1. Focus on one main topic or niche.
  2. Publish high-quality, in-depth content regularly.
  3. Cover all related subtopics.
  4. Use proper keywords naturally.
  5. Get backlinks from trusted, topic-related sites.

To become an authority on the "sales" theme, not only do you need backlinks, but you also need to tell Google through the system and high-quality content that you truly understand - otherwise it will only treat you as a general content site.
