What is the most important factor in SEO?

I have a system that allows ranking for competitive terms using on-page optimization with internal pages. however I wouldn't recommend trying it if you do not have a complete understanding on google's ranking system

Well basically everything is important from your on page seo and off page seo. But if you like to rank better then inbund links is usually the key =)

niche oriented domain name :P
custome link name that has a good keyword ranking :D
backlinks :D

Off Page:
1 keyword 1 page
On page anchor links from high pr pages are the king!
DO NOT vary your anchor text for your keyword
Backlink to internal pages only - get your double indent from G
URL consistency - pick a format - stick to one http:// style - end slashes make a difference too.

Read Backlinks Hydra - It's all there.

I wonder if this si really true. Because some keywords i've seen rank #1 outrank others have less domain backlinks pr and content. Only thing i beat them at was exact domain match and on page seo.

From my research it seems backlinks is the key. Others are important too but not too difficult.

Good keyword research. Good on page optimization structure....title,meta,description,H1,Alt img....good off page optimization...focusing on keyword rich anchor text backlinks. Consistent content, consistent backlinks.

onsite seo is important
offsite seo is ultra important
keyword research is important as well. =)

Basically, if you do proper keyword research and try to squeeze your site into some low competition niche you'll reach 1st page. If you want to get into more competitive niches there's a lot of work ahead of you. Big arse content site, major link building strategy etc.

but like i said: keyword research (very easy), competition research (easy with proper tools such as market samurai / micro niche finder / traffic travis / seoquake plugin for firefox), onsite seo (easy if you have the articles already), offsite seo (hard, frustrating, time consuming)

Can you rank for an unrelated keyword if you build enough links to the site?

For example if you have a site about Fish and want to rank for a Cat related word, by building enough links with the cat keyword as anchor text would that make you rank your fish site for the cat keyword?

Unique Content / Keyword
Backlink (all links)
SEO

My latest experience says
1) Backlinks with anchor specially related to the domain and page Title.
2) Text and unique content (long term endurance on top)
3) On page Seo (same as 2) Keywords included
4) Page Rank

Respectfully, the question strikes me as silly. The most important factor is insufficient by itself to get a site to rank highly. The better question might be "What combination of factors is necessary to get me to rank in position #______ ?"

While there are a lot of opinions, there can be no definite answer to OP's question without knowing the Google algorithm. People (even experts) can guess as to relative importance of various factors, but none of them exist in a vacuum. For competitive keywords, you must have strength in virtually all of the factors to rank highly.

I agree with disposable.
There is no such thing as "the most important factor in SEO." What you have is a combination of factors that will improve your rankings.
Each keyword will be treated differently, because the competition will be different for each one of them. Based on that, a website with ONLY
the title carrying the "keywords," with no "theme" or "siloing", backlinks or optimized content STILL can be #1...and I've done to prove my point to myself. And such thing was reached in a big city like Los Angeles.

What is the most important factor in SEO? NEVER STOP LEARNING!

Once you "think" you know everything, that's when you'll lose the war.
