Is probably not the latest method, but the last I start using is broken links. In some cases worked well.
 
Traditional backlink sources is still effective if it will be doing in white hat techniques.

Not to be negative, but buyer beware, there's a lot of bullshit in this thread. "Article Submission", for one. This makes your backlinks look spammy, as google themselves have said that they're going to weight article directory links as spam. "Write good content and people will link to you". Bullshit. You have to be found first. You can have the greatest content in the world but if nobody ever finds you, it's good for nothing. Focus on good content AND a solid backlinking strategy.
 
Conversion rate optimization, outreach link building, citation but I think all methods are still working even the old stuff. All you have to do is generate quality content/links, follow google's guidelines, pour out all the ingredients with unlimited effort.
