Focus on link earning and forget about link building and use the following to get backlinks that will Boost your traffic
1. use Quora and Yahoo answers and respond to the question
2. Broken link building (Use Wikipedia and try to find Wikipedia dead links)
3. Find the competitors' links
4. Use Reddit
5. Link Out to Authority Sites
6. try to follow Moving Man Method techniques

According to my experience private blog network (PBN) is effective in these days but after some time expected that practice will be insufficient.

Link building on broken links method is old few years and it is very time demanding and uncertain method...
From my exp. for me showed as good approach is next :
1 Guest blogging, building PBN, editorial links for T1 - cons. of this, it is money demanding
2 Web 2.0 as T2 links
3 Do that continually with steady pace and velocity

First of all, the best method is of link building is to stay away from spammy links. Do not buy bulk links from spammy sites/blogs.
Then...
1. Editorial link is the best method and worth the money.
2. PBN is also good. But make sure blogs are relevant and maintained well.
3. Guest posting can be done on authoritative sites using unique and meaningful contents.
Then...

Haven't heard much in the way of any new link building techniques. I myself still use the older ones such as blog posting, forum posting, submitting articles to reddit and such which seem to work well.

Google wants to reward ?user value add? highlighted by organic ? NATURAL ? links. They want to reward a ?good user experience?, basically ? and unnatural links don?t form any part of that concept.
