Guest posting and PBN are the best ways. You can also go with blog commenting, forum posting. Nowadays content posts are getting stronger.

Traffic now influences your ranking, because Chrome is a spy and there's analytics everywhere, so the patterns of visitors on sites deeply influence SERPs. Unfortunately, this benefits those who buy tons of CPC. Just coincidentally, Google sells CPC traffic.
 
Still working on sites myself I can't say that I have come across many other techniques other than the ones I have been using for years now which is guest posting on blogs and forum posting. Any way in which I can get backlinks but also potentially gain traffic.
 
Still the same techniques as there was previously, some may be more affective than others but all work in ways that help to gain traffic and good rankings.
 
A simple definition of link building in 2015 is that it is the art of getting other websites to link to your website to improve your own rankings in Google. There are many ways to build links in 2015. Some techniques are legitimate or ‘white hat' and many techniques are ‘black hat' e.g violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines
 
Writing quality content and submitting it to high Pr blogs and then promoting them to social media accounts will increase traffic to your website and also count as backlinks.

Can you describe what you mean by mid-term: 3-6 months? Are just saying that this works until google catches up to you and then they de-index you?

Yeppp right on. Expensive, definitely! Time consuming to DIY? Yes but why not? :)
 
I'd go with commenting and web 2.0, there are good sellers here in BHW that do proficient work. Should help somewhat.

You will need to update your site with fresh content. You can also submit your site on open directory like DOMZ and others. If you don't know how to do all thing than I will suggest you to hire any expert.
