Chat traffic is traffic generated by using bots in both chat rooms and over instant messengers e.g. MSN, Yahoo messenger etc. Normally it's used for ewhoring to get sales for webcams, dating etc. e.g. a pretty girl messages you out of the blue and the bot says something like "come and find me on somedatingsite.com," where of course the surfer will have to sign up so the webmaster gets paid.
Chat traffic is definitely not "shit" traffic and sometimes it converts exceptionally well because of that personal touch. There are also some chat traffic webmasters who do enormous volume e.g. 50-100 paid signups to dating per day. However the method will bring a lot of complaints, which is why a lot of affiliate programs won't take it, or they'll only take it on the sly.

Well that would depend on how much your bank charges you for chargebacks. Most programs that take chat traffic would be banging the cards as hard as possible anyway. Or they will send their chat traffic to an off-label program using a compliant bank who will fold the CBs in with their clean traffic to avoid Visa's attention for as long as possible.
In my experience "shit" traffic generally refers to traffic that doesn't convert... Chat traffic definitely converts. Whether it ends up being profitable or not is up to the program.
There's certainly no shortage of programs willing to take chat traffic on the sly. Much like bulk mailing... It brings the heat but it brings the profits too.

i work with chat traffic, its like a sales representative in a department store that will going to convince some client to sign up to the site you are selling in any way, its up to you. . and as for autumn its all correct, ewhoring is the best term for doing chat traffic. its very good on my side, been working for it for about 4 years and still gaining more income. i also have a site that accepts chat traffic..
That's basically what chatsales dot com was. Guys aren't interested in purchasing a reoccurring membership, especially in a chat scenario. Your best bet is to find a PPS cam program. PM me if you want more info. I know of one that pays $55 per sale and accepts chat traffic. They also offer training.
I work for an affiliate program. I'm more interested in the other side of the job
We are thinking about asking people to promote our porn site on chats but we have just membership sites and not dating or cam sites

Chat traffic is still around - I started working with the longest running program around - so far so good!

yup chat traffic certainly does work, however, many programs are not so happy to accept it, and thus it can be important on occasion to mix in some less sketchy, display/social etc traffic
