What is an event that changed your life?

Ever watch the Netflix mini doc that came out last year called "The Program?". I was sent to one of the "schools" they mentioned and showed briefly (not the main one). While the programs in the TTI are horrible, I'm pretty sure if I didn't have that experience I'd be a much different person.

I can interpret your question in 2 ways, and both are correct:

1) my life had always been linear, in the sense that I've never had major events, happy or unhappy, in anything (I've never won the lottery, I've never known love at first sight, I've never had big pleasant surprises, I've never attended a live match or concert of my favorite musical bands or sports team, I've never received valuable gifts, I've never had any MAJOR happy or unhappy event of any kind EVER)

2) these being said (and analyzing my life in retrospect), I did have small events, both happy and unhappy, almost every day of my life that have not affected me deeply in the short term, but - when taken together - have affected me over the long term. Even today (and over the last 5-10 years) I keep stumbling upon both happy and unhappy (well, unhappy most of the time due to the nature of the world we live in today mostly) events almost daily that shape my being and my understanding of life in general, and of people in particular.

I won't mention the small things that have happened over my 45 years of existence because there are too many to list them all, but what I can say, however, is that one of the most important moments for me (which had shaped my understanding of this world and which is also responsible to a high degree for my way of thinking) is the fact that my mother had introduced me to one of her favorite writers (back then) when I have started being depressed and not give a fuck about anyone and anything from this world, anymore.

At that point, I have stumbled upon the books of an ex secret service Romanian writer (Pavel Corut for those who know him), and I've binged his entire collection (120+ books) in a few short years... I would manage to absorb like a sponge everything he's had to say in each new book in about 4-7 hours (it had depended on that book's thickness), that much I have been immersed into those books and I have absorbed so much knowledge from them that even today (the guy had been murdered 2-ish years ago) - were he to come back to life and write another book, 200 long pages if needs be - I think I'd still finish it within hours :D

I feel like this had been the turning point in my life, because - had I not been introduced to that dude's books - I would have probably ended up killing myself, or maybe I would have been thrown into the streets or something... I have been in really deplorable states in my life... even today I'm not fully cured and I still have my moments of lunacy (or what resembles to lunacy to me), but those books have given me a new, and accurate perspective on life that I would have not gotten from anywhere else, and they've helped me understand humans better, and where most of our problems come from...

Anyway, sorry for the long rant, but you asked so I had to answer, I couldn't help myself :p
This was a deep one but really appreciate you sharing that :) It is interesting to see the different things that can completely change someone's mental, in my case it is moving countries, in your case it is reading those books... We all have our own strange path that makes us who we are. You are all older and wiser than me so I wont try and drop wisdom haha but instead I will just again thank you for sharing that with us and let you know that the fact you are here now after so many years still grinding and learning shows the kind of person you are,.

I can't.

I'm her bitch.

I'm forced to love apple products or I don't get any food.

Please help.

It hurts.

TBH she scares me too bro so your on your own hahaha.
Yes but
later on in life, when you do pull yourself out of that mud
you would appreciate someone actually trying wake you up from your nightmare

then again
maybe i'm just too old, since instead of being honest, people rather baby & enable them nowadays

I do appreciate you dont worry, I guess my mind is doing donuts rn because of some stuff going on with my dads health and I have just been overthinking a lot. But I am one of the lucky ones that where raised very tough and had a lot of honest people around me so I am used to hurtful honesty.

On a less serious note.... I guess from your last sentence you are not in the age range of 23-28 and single? ;)

yep! And that's where beauty lies in ;)

wisdom is meaningless drivel until it resonates with someone. Every thought and every observation that you make daily can be considered wisdom by those who get hit by your observations hard, so you ARE creating wisdom anyway, consciously or unconsciously, so don't worry about it :)

I will just again thank you for sharing that with us and let you know that the fact you are here now after so many years still grinding and learning shows the kind of person you are,.
no problem, it's not like I sweat or anything sharing my story :)

Cheers!

I wish your dad for a swift recovery mate

I had a "life-changing" spooky moment a few months ago. I've never been the same since. I can't compute what happened, and trust me, you wouldn't believe me if I told you.

I won't go into too much detail as to what exactly happened but one thing lead to another and now I have no trust in anyone who is irrational, insufferable, stupid parasitic human-shaped vermin who believe that my life is a proxy to what they have failed to achieve in their own lives or that I most conform to whatever they believe is the truth. Unfortunately, this is the vast majority of my family and extended family. Though I am labelling them in a very nasty way, but it gets the job done as to explain the picture enough as to what nonsense that has come before me.

A particular event made it glaringly obvious that we don't see eye to eye, and it's not like I am just intolerant of different opinions so much so that I have to hate someone for it. I can hate things people stand for whilst still dying by their side because they are more than just some embodiment of an opinion. It is just that I disagree on the fundamentals of reality and the interaction with reality with my family to the point where I cannot see any future with them. I've been treated unfairly to the point where I just had enough. No one can really care for yourself more than yourself.

Despite this negatively impacting my life, I do try my best to stand on my own two feet and the entire situation has opened a kinda third eye for me. Mostly in the form of using reason to guide my life instead of beliefs handed down from platitudes in some book and unhealthy collectivist cultures. It's has done me well and has even managed to make me explore more to this world than anything I could have ever known of, seriously, there is so much out there.

Whilst this particular event had a lot in saying about my life changing, I do think most things that happen aren't so dramatic that they need to be counted as the single most defining points in my life. I knew from miles away that this would happen. I've even had some self-discovery moments be pretty interesting to look into as well that I would have never have guessed were to be true for me. Everything kinda stacks on top of one another and it's just a matter of navigating through it all.

But yeah, shit happens, just gotta move forward, y'know?

Moving out on my own at a young age changed everything. It taught me independence and the value of hard work. Sometimes a change in environment really opens your eyes

tell me master of everything
It's a long one. It is 100% real and completely terrifying at the same time.

I'll tell my story as it's been playing on my mind ever since it happened (although this probably isn't the right place for it).

So, here goes.....

Twenty years ago, in the UK, my friend and I (both teenagers) decided to have some alcohol on a hot summer night. After a few cold ones, we decided to go for a walk. After walking for around 30 minutes, we came across an old abandoned factory. Long story short, being young, dumb, and tipsy, I decided to climb up to the roof and balance across one of the iron beams that once supported the roof.

After reaching halfway, the beam started to shake due to my weight. I began to shake, terrified, as falling meant certain death. I closed my eyes and braced myself for the fall. A few seconds later, I opened my eyes, and somehow, I was on the other side. All I remember was having a strange pins-and-needles sensation in my body and my friend asking me why I was "messing about" on the beam (apparently, I had my arms open as though an unseen person was guiding me across).

Fast forward 20 years, and I've never spoken to anyone about that night. Not a single soul. Me and my old friend lost contact shortly after that evening, and I moved abroad.

This Christmas, my 4-year-old daughter and I watched Tom and Jerry on TV. A scene came up where Tom chased Jerry across a roof beam on a building site. She turned to me smiling and said, "Daddy, look, this is where you died and went to heaven".

It took me a few seconds to process what she was referring to (I hadn't thought about that summer night in years) before it hit me like a freight train.....

I asked her what she meant, and she said, "Do you remember when you fell?" - pointing at the TV - I had to leave the room to prevent her from seeing my reaction.

Now, there's no possible way for her to know about that night; nobody knows, and I've since learned my old friend (who was with me that night) died about a decade ago. In addition, I had no idea she even knew what death and heaven was.

I have so many unanswered questions, and probably none of them can ever be answered in any logical way.

This was the "event" that changed my life and, to be honest, I'll probably never be the same again.
