Bot, is a software application that runs automated tasks over the Internet. Typically, bots perform tasks that are both simple and structurally repetitive, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone.
You can have bot working for you or you can learn how to code them and sell them to others .

Say you want to make comments on a ton of blogs to get backlinks to your site. You can use a bot to automatically do this for you. Basically a bot makes life easier by automating tasks. It does it so you don't have to and frees up your time to do other things. The example above is just an example, don't do that to your site. There's tons of bots out there that can do different things.

There are many examples of bots here on the forum such as Tube Toolbox - Automates adding YouTube contacts, subscribing to channels and sending messages.
Essentially a bot is just a piece of software that automates a task, and can be built for a vast amount of sites.

There are plenty of Bots are available in the web used for different purpose. For example, chatter bot is a program that can stimulate talk with the human being. Like wise shop bot is a program that shops around the web and locate best price for a product which you are looking for. All are helps to reduce the work load.

Bots are like robots ! You program them to make your life easier ! You put them to work ... they will follow the command they are created for. Bots are of different types. Some bots crawls website and get back with some kind of information, some bots finds the url of images, some bots makes auto posts, some bots increase like on fb etc etc

Not all are safe. Naturally there are some bots which may ruin your website ranking.
Beside, there are really good bots that can help you with your SEO efforts.

A Bot may be of different types depending on what its purpose is and in what language it has been programmed.
Off the top of the head, a Bot is basically a tool that emulates/simulates human behaviour. It can do anything that we program it to do.
However, it does not do it by itself but instead gives commands to the computer according to the instructions we have given it.
It may be in C programming or just iMacros. It can be in Python and various other languages (let me tell you, the list is endless)
So at this point, it is better to assume that a Bot basically makes our lives easier, automating tasks that we would probably have to do sitting in front of the computer.
In the future, use Google for such questions so you dont come off looking like a simpleton.
