What do you say to your haters?

Don't mind them. I am a full time freelancer and all the people I know look down at me for not taking "REGULAR OFFICE JOBS" and saying I'm putting my degree to waste. Where in fact I earn twice of what my college mates earn in the office at the comfort of my home and also in the schedules that I prefer.

Its the working mans mentality. Go to school, get a job, get married have kids.

Quote from A Bronx Tale
"The working mans a sucker"

No one says do what you want when you want as long as you can support yourself. This will continue to change as more jobs become automated.

Every time I go to a family party I always get when are you going back to work? I just don't get why people don't understand working online is a real full-time job..

Hope this helps you deal with family parties.

When I've got to answer this kind of questions to family members or people that I can't avoid, then instead of hating this "questioning" moment, I decided to actually turn the moment into my favor.

Since my answers won't cut through people's minds that have no idea on what we're doing online and only listen to respond, make fun of you and they're not actually interested in the subject, then I've found that I should stop wasting my time and energy to try to explain what I do, and instead have some fun with it. Why?

Because while I started off as explaining to make the conversation interesting, because I LOVE IM, people thought that I was actually trying to "explain myself" of why I don't get a "real job". My passion for IM and analyzation were "excuses" to their point of view.

You can give some answers that will possibly increase their defenses to you, but you'll get a peace of mind, cause these answers are short and to the point.

Make sure to not be aggressive, just smile and be normal, your aim is not to insult them, your aim is to get as real as it gets and be done with the conversation (unless someone asks because he cares and tries not to be a smart**s).

Now, if they get insulted while your face expressions and posture have nothing "insulting", then you know that they received the meaning of your response and won't try to get back at you.

Q: When are you going back to work dude? Get a real job dude

Possible answers:

1. Never. Cause I want to work for myself and not for someone else.
2. Why should I go back to work? To work more for less money? (like you? - optional, you might get into a conflict, but works for cousins that think they rule the family).

What I love saying is a combination of both:

3. Only idiots prefer to work more hours, for someone else, for less money. I prefer to work when I want to and not take orders from others. I love making money for doing stuff that I love.

Number 3 works really well, since their brains and faces are trying to find a response to belittle you, but they can't actually do that. After some seconds of not being to come back at you then they increase their defenses and they answer something along the lines:

Aw really? Then why don't you show us what you do if what you say is real?

This is the perfect question that shows they're aggravated with themselves of doing all the stuff you mentioned above. Since they can't come back at you, they'll try to steal your methods.

You can say "I didn't spend my time teaching myself these methods to give them away to people that believe IM is not a real job. I thought you said that IM is not a real job, sorry."

You get the idea. This conversation lasts maximum 1-2 minutes and you'll have a peace of mind, while not spending energy to explain something to someone that won't appreciate it in the first place.

As MisterF mentioned, the best thing to do is to laugh and continue with your life, but in family moments where you can't "run away" and "ignore", you can turn these moments into your favor and have a good laugh about it.

I tell them it's just pure business. We are not obliged to show them at all, we don't owe them that privilege .
Just smile and don't make a provoking stance in what you believe in and what you do. I have the same situation and I totally understand what you feel.
Thing is society has nailed in our brains that we should follow what they deemed "normal" . Means everyone should have the same routine, all work on a 9-5 job, finish school at a certain age, like and follow the latest fashion trends, get married at this point of their...I could go on...
Continue what you're doing mate, love your family and friends and have a nice day :)

Don't even waste your time thinking about the haters, it's a waste of good resources. Just keeping doing what you're doing.

to accpet that someone break the conventions and making a living with IM, is for the
conservative majority kind a like to agree that they own life's is just a lie or waste of time.

Don't need to say anything, just achieve success if you can't, then just stay happy..it kills them!

Don't let the discomfort of other disturb your inner peace. If people don't like you because of your lifestyle, let them be. I totally commend what others have said above. Anyone who attains a certain level of success will instill jealousy in other. You cannot please everybody and if people consistently disrespect you, leave them behind; walk and never look back. Enjoy life!

I been making a full-time income online for a while now supporting myself, wife, and kid. I love my family and friends but I notice their are a lot of haters that think what I'm doing is only temporary. Every time I go to a family party I always get when are you going back to work? I just don't get why people don't understand working online is a real full-time job.

For those of you that make a full-time income online what do you tell your family and friends what you do? I swear people in my family think I'm doing something illegal because I will not show them my websites. Do you show your family your money websites or screenshots of how much money you make? I don't but sometimes I feel like being like those online entrepreneurs on YouTube showing screenshots of their earnings.

Your real problem is ur not making enough money
Sadly I have the same problem, but ill keep pushing until I Will
think about it, if next time you go to your familys house and park your BMW series 7 outside, dress like a boss and maybe even wear a rolex (not that im into material things but im talking about the level where buying all this crap don't even matter) their laughing and stupid comments will turn into "OMG OP please teach me!"
they will turn their hate into admiration.

get there and see.
good luck to us :)

Brutal!

I disowned most of my relatives like that years ago. All of them usually fell into one of two groups:
  • Misery loves company. They want you to fail just like they have so they can have someone to relate to.
  • They want you to succeed, but only in a way they can understand (i.e., go to school, get a degree, become a doctor or lawyer; because other careers don't exist). Making "Internet monies on smartphones and the bookface" is incomprehensible to them.
They thought I wouldn't stop talking to them, but they didn't consider the fact that I wasn't attached to any of them. They wanted to be unsupportive and spread lies about me to discourage me, so I tossed them aside like the garbage they are.

I am of the same school of thought. Blood means nothing if it's not a two-way street. I had been spending a considerable amount of money, time & effort supporting a relative through medical hardship and they decided to repay me by trying to disrespect me by stealing from a (top of the line) property I was paying the rent for them. I can play the fuck you game with no regrets after someone proves that they are dangerous.
