What do pirates gain from stealing copyrighted content?

When I say pirate, I am talking about the people who upload the original torrents, not the ones who download and share. They risk so much for (seemingly) no reward. A new movie drops, they go through the trouble of going to the theater record it and upload it for free so others can profit off it. I just don't get what's in it for them. Some even make packages for the seasons of TV shows. Why?

Money

Some people like helping others. Like with anime or anime movies, they aren't in many theaters so not many can watch them

The guys who actually film in theaters probably sell bootlegs.

Sharing is caring? It's voluntary, a community service. They don't do it to gain anything, they do it for the community, so others can enjoy it. How else are Asian bootleggers going to sell pirated movies to tourists?

Also some of these guys have their own websites like eztv, where they get ad revenue I suppose.

That one time I made a torrent, it made me feel helpful and import. xD

Well . . . you can look at it in this way: If there were no pirates, there would be no torrents. Some people upload them solely for the sake of recognition.

It's a moral issue. If you are disturbed by the fact that people are uploading pirated materials, then maybe you should stay away from torrent sites.

The choice is yours . . .

By the way, I never watch movies that are shot in the theater with a handheld cam. The quality always sucks.

Agree with this. And also, perhaps some people are actually passionate about the torrent scene and they are doing what they do to keep it going - if there weren't people willing to do that, how do you (OP) think that torrents would even exist?

Au contraire, I actually use torrents and was just thinking(while download a full season of Westworld), why did someone take the time to put this all together... But I got my answer... Passion, Recognition and Kindness
