I also had this doubt. What I thought is that those websites place a lot of Google ads in each page and make money from it.

These kind of sites are usually part of a big network of sites controlled by a media company. They use traffic arbitrage method and because of that they need to use the pagination/multiple pages per post structure just to increase the pageviews from each visitor.

I will say these websites fit in the "clickbait, only for ads, virus of the internet, made by greedy fake media companies" category.
