Weird Google Ranking WTF Is This?!

I have a web site I set up recently (a few months ago), that is for a 3 word keyword, let's say 'dog training site'. So the domain is dogtrainingsite.com - the site doesn't have many links built up yet.

Now here's the weird thing:

Even though the site isn't anywhere to be found in google for a search on 'dog training site'

I'm on the first page for 'Dog Training' (without any quotes!)

And in google's keyword suggestion tool, EXACT global monthly searches for them are:

dog training 110,000
dog training site 8,100

And BTW I am NOT signed in to any google toolbar, etc.

How could I have gotten this?! And also, is google actually penalizing sites for being to exact (i.e. dog training site with dogtrainingsite.com)?

Same thing happened to me I was targeting A certain item from a brand name and even though it took me 2 months to rank for the keyword "Brand name Item" with only 2k search a month I ranked for the "Brand Name" and it had 550k searchs and I was the 4th spot! lol.

Are you getting the traffic you should get being on the first page for a kw like that?

Otherwise you are on the first page of Google only on your computer :)

And no penalizations for Exact Match kws, don't worry.

Ride the wave and enjoy. Google likes to give new sites a boost for the first few months. So dont neglect it. continue with link building, as when the 'Honeymoon period' is over google with drop you to where it thinks you should be. If you do no link building during this period, then you will drop a long way!

You have any statistics? What do they say?

@businessbira Yes it was getting a huge jump in traffic until I checked it today, it's now at the last spot on the first page for the 2 word key word and traffic was several times higher.

Try making sure you're logged out when conducting the search. Otherwise, I'd say that's some really weird stuff. Could be the result of the recent algorithm changes, I've seen a lot of questionable stuff ranking for terms. Also, depending on how competitive that two word term is, it might not be all that surprising. If it's something less popular, it may be the result of EMDs losing their weight but the two word term not being all that competitive. Hope it's getting you some traffic :)

Was your domain previously owned by someone else who could have possibly got some backlinks?

@dandee0014 As I wrote in the first posted I AM NOT signed into google, etc. And the weird thing is if it ranks for dog training (regardless of how much or little competition), the question is why isn't it ranking for dog training site (the exact match domain).

@coxie Nope, Just a first time domain buy, and I've checked the BLs, they're only ones that I've built myself.

Oh, and an update, it dropped one more spot to the first result on the second page.

What anchor text did you use to build the majority of the links?
and how many anchors did you use

@aldragon Not sure, only did one or two small SB blasts. And the anchor text is VERY varied.

Also, it's back up to the last page listed on the first page of google.

I believe this has to do with your own browsers web cache. Try clearing it and perform another search. I've had this happen to me on several occasions and now I just do a serp position check online.

Interesting stuff. I think this has happened to me to. I built my first site and was one page 1 within 5 days. I was signed out aswell and started to see traffic flood in fast.
Then I am punched in the face with the reality that my page is now GONE.
COMPLETELY DISSAPEARED.
Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone- I guess this is all down to experience!

@infinite nope, I clear all my cookies and cache several times a day, it's not that

@easytext were you instantly ranking for high volume keywords as well or just the exact match keyword?

keep on building backlinks if you want to stay at top, otherwise site rankings will drop..
