Should I buy a small VPS or make my own VM?

My only concern is that people will be able to track my location (when for e.a. using Skype for business) and I'm not sure if a VM gives enough privacy as I would still be using my regular internet connection?

I could combine the VM with a VPN, but I'm not sure if that would deliver sufficient speed compared to just buying a VPS + I would have to make important accounts via a VPN which somewhat scares me.

A VPS would give me the privacy of a VPN (right? That's what I've read), but I would be forced to pay a certain amount per month which I would rather not as my main PC has more than enough power to run a fast VM (lot faster compared to the VPS I'd buy) + Windows instead of a VPS with Linux.

In short, I just don't want clients to be able to track my main location for obvious privacy reasons. Would a VM (+ if needed VPN) or a VPS be the best solution? My preference would be a VM as I could easily make one with my current specs.
