Ok, so it's no secret I support many of the developers here on BHW as well as other sites. You know why? Because it makes my job easier when I'm using the tools and I can provide feedback so that they in turn can make it a better tool. I especially appreciate those devs who stick around longer than most. So with that being said, I give you my overview of a specific site of which I've done 0 backlinking, created 15 pages or so of unique content and has small global comp, but extremely HIGH local comp.
I've got a ton of tools in my aresenal. I literally have a bunch of servers in rack space in a colo in Houston where I do my work from (if not also from my home machines for quick testing as well). I like some tools, love others, and some I can just do without because they're not worth the payment some owner made to a third party developer in Indonesia..but I digress..
(side note, i've been meaning to update my seotooluniverse.com site for awhile now..hmm may have to get back into that with new tool entries. If anyone knows of a tool that they want listed, for free, let me know)
Ok, so onto the case study. It's pretty short to be honest. Kicked off a new wordpress design, focusing on a local market which has a ton of comp. I've been in this space for awhile where I create local sites, contact people listed on pages 2-5 of Google and then sell said site. Bingo Boingo Profit. Can't beat that..seriously.
But this time, I decided to branch off a bit from my web 2.0's, contextual backlink sites within the industry, and just try using NoHandsSeo of which I used to use all the time when it was released. Got great results with it back then, but with any new shiny object, I moved on to the lastest and greatest and got lost in my other toys/tools.
So I did a ton of onpage optimization, made sure I wrote the text for LSI considerations and not just straight up keyword based text, and then setup a profile in Nohands to let run off one of my home laptops, for about a month. Stopping the program here and there for updates. That's it. Nothing else.
Just some results below..
My overall keywords listed with the site with which i'm QUITE happy with:
One of my harder to rank words starting to get positive movement..
So as you can see, it's actually ranking fairly well for being about a month old website. I'm going to wait another 15 days before I start sending invites to purchase to those "less fortunate" webmaster on pages 2-5. But the goal here is to educate those who feel like one tool is better than the other. FORGET reading about shit. Actually test it for yourself..and test it extensively. I did a parallel test with another industry website and found very similar results, so that I didn't delude myself into thinking this was a winner just on the basis of one site.
Now, here's the caveat to all of this: no one tool is right for every job. If I'm trying to rank for "coke" and my name isn't Coke as a company, I'm fucked. Just using this one tool aint gonna do jack shit for me. But depending on your keyword analysis BEFORE you use any tool, you'll get a feel for what will work or not work before you hit the go button. What is also important with automation tools is being able to setup specifics as to posting to low OBL pages, high PR domains, etc. You need to be smart with these tools and not just "click it and forget it, oh shit why am I not ranking???". Put some effort into any tool you use, and you should reap the benefits.
