Types of Backlinks Simplified:
1. Niche Edits, Guest posts, HARO links, PBN, or any other type of contextual link that comes from outreach or building linkable content that site owners will link to.2. Everything else. Examples: Citations, blog comments, video links, directories, social profiles, Q&A links, web 2.0s, forum links, slideshows, etc.
- First Type of Backlinks: will do the majority of the "heavy lifting" with moving your rankings forwards.
These links are the hardest to get, and Google knows it. They are essentially a vote for your content and pass high levels of trust, authority, and relevance.
- Second Type of Backlinks: AKA "pillow links": can be made fairly easily by anyone with some time on their hands and are used for diversity and ensuring your backlink profile looks natural. These will keep your site healthy and help future-proof your site for any possible algo updates.
The exception here is citations which are super important for local, but they are still more of a requirement rather than a rank-pusher.
Have a good day.
