Unless you've been living under a rock, if you're into Twitter you'll know they plan to roll out a new algo next week (Google it if you don't know what I'm on about)

What are people's thoughts with regards to monetization?

    Hello,

you mean the timeline new algo?

My thoughts are: marketers will leave because they will be discouraged, other marketers will stay and will make more money.

    I will stay.

Well the algo change is that it'll be like Facebook. They're copying Facebook basically.

So if you tweet out with a link to your blog, because it's latest news, your followers could in theory see it days later or not at all.

This to me now creates a hole in the market.

So, spam your link the shit out of hell. Some followers will see it. That's simple.

This makes zero sense for Twitter, they are slowly killing the network in a bid to make more money.

Exactly. They're copying Facebook because Facebook are the market leaders in terms of making money.

Personally speaking, I log into my Facebook account and see that friends have commented/liked something on one of their friend's wall who I don't even know! Why alert me to that? It's of no interest to me.

Common Sense often goes out of the window when money comes into it.

Yes they have already stated mailing users to opt for advertisements to gain better results. That will surely kill the reach lets see what happens Twitter cards maybe can do little help.

Waiting for see the results properly

    Cheers

I've been getting emails from them for months, inviting me to try their advertising platform, so that part isn't new.

But algorithms are generally always wrong - just look at Google. They're still trying to improve their algorithm after all this time. Facebook are nowhere near as I get all sorts of shite on my timeline that I've no interest in.

Instead of innovating, they will take out the only reason why twitter users are here: the linear timeline. It's also one of the worst feature of facebook. Except that everybody is on facebook for the messenger and the picture albums, which twitter doesnt have.

So twitter, get your shit together, or kiss good bye.

Obviously trying to force people to get more reach/exposure through their paid ads. I guess whether this sticks or not will depend on paid ads performance after pushing this.

Like I said before, this now creates a hole in the market. A new platform could come out and do what Twitter and Facebook have not done - think of their users.

maybe it's not the end just yet: "Josh Sternberg, director of branded content for NBC News, says the algorithm-based timeline will likely be opt in as opposed to suddenly becoming the new default.", so we might not see a sudden drop in traffic

Twitter and facebook are totally different and twitter will fail by implementing something that works for facebook just because of one thing.

Facebook is divided by groups, pages and person and twitter is not. Facebook can lowers the page reach becouse they know its a page, but twitter can make a difference because they have one acc for all.

So if they lower the reach they will lower it for everyone and whats the point of this for the real user who what to tweet something to there friend. lol twitter will send them a message to advet for more reach.

Facebook started out as an opt-in. That won't last. It will eventually become mandatory.
