[Tips]7 Common Mistakes to Avoid in Keyword Research

here's what you might be missing:
when 100 users make a broad search for buy balls, (which btw you might have a lot and that might explain why you have the sheep brain) google will show you that 100 searches have been made for the broad search. (ofcourse, it is possible that g will not show you the real searches and it might show you like 200 or 300, or something like that beacause they can do whatever they want on their home)

on the other hand, 50 users might make the search in quotes, and other 25 might make it in brackets. and if that's the case adw tool will show you 50 searches for the phrase and 25 for exact match.

Oh wow man you deserve a double facepalm now..SERIOUSLY!

Cyberzilla-

Thanks for the thread man, this rocks. Let me ask you about local searches. Say I have a keyword:

London auto repair shop

Do I still do "exact" match when use G KT? And then just put all my combinations of it, such as

London auto repair shop
auto repair shop london
auto repair shop in london

But still do exact search for them?

So what I'm asking is exact match universal for local searches & I'm just responsible for my own combinations & longtails?

Thanks

What do you mean by "exact" here? putting the keyword in quotes in the word box in the keyword tool and finding the exact search count??

Just realize one thing bro. The search count what we get from all the keyword tool out there including Google is just an estimate. If you target a keyword, look for the exact search count to estimate the traffic.

Thanks So Much, I just send this post to 4 of my trainees and it really help em out, I hate having to teach them each Keyword Research, this guide really helps them fix some of their mistakes!

Thanks Again

ok, mister sheep.
this proves how good at reading you are from adwords, yet failing to think logical.

i'll make it easier for you to understand, hopefully you'll get it.

adwords is defining what all the queries do by showing you examples of what each one does, and that's the examples you showed earlier.

Note! if your sheep head thinks that google will show you no of searches for variations of that kwd for broad search, well, guess again, it's not.

now, why is exact match more important than broad search ?
well, it's NOT.

exact match, might show you, as studies have showed, that there is a better chance that people searching the exact match, will take action / will buy the stuff from your site.

so, should one only go for the exact match only?
absolutely freaking NOT

it would be silly of me to only consider the exact match when i can consider the broad and phrase which are very relevant to the searches been made.

if you're telling me you didn't get traffic to your website using the broad search it might have been at best, because at that time you targeted a low traffic kwd; something like 1k broad searches and you got a ranking in g at best in the 2nd / 3rd positions where the traffic is way more low than the 1st position.

it might have also happened that you didn't get traffic from the 1k broad search because you got a rank on 4th...to 10th or so positions, where the traffic chances are smaller, as very few users might make a click on them.

there is one more thing that might have happened. you might have gotten a sheep brain and failed to realize that traffic from g differs from one position to another

so if you targeted a kwd of 1k searches for broad query and got into a 6th position, the traffic might have been 4% * 1000 = 40 uv / month.

The End.

p.s my 1st post on this thread was not at all meant to show anyone how mr cutts i am, nor try to make the op feel lame. so, i'll take offensive the attitude prior to that post.

the idea was to underline that one should not go with just the exact match as it would be silly thing to NOT consider the other options available.

the exact match is an additional feature to predict the conversion rate. and it should be used in conjunction with the other options if one needs better and more accurate predictions for their traffic.

p.s 2 the attitude on this thread, following my topic, shows how cocky and immature some of the 'fellas' on this board can be when someone sees things in a different perspective as theirs.

My explanation about Broad/Phrase/Count is 100% correct. If you still need more spoon feeding, try this Spend some time reading what others says about the match types.

ROFL! who in the world do a search in Gg0ole with keywords in [Square brackets]! LOL Of course, none of the keyword tools shows you accurate search count. All what we get is just an estimate. In that, if you take the broad search count and build a site for that keyword, you WILL fail in getting expected traffic. You want some real time examples??

Thread-1(link)

I recently made a new blog for a term that Google keyword tool says has got 3,300,000 global monthly search volume. And i am currently on page 1 6th position for that term and guess what almost no traffic for that keyword is coming in.

Can anyone tell me WTH is going on here for me has anyone experienced the same

its a 3 word key phrase.
Thread-2(link)
Hi,

I used the google external keyword tool to find a search term that has 40k global searches a month, and registered a domain name containing that term.

I'm now ranked #2 for that term and there's still no traffic to the site.
I may not have the best design skills, but they aren't too bad. Even if the articles aren't informative, at the very least, people would have visited and left. Problem is no one is visiting at all.

To check ranking, I used scroogle scraper as well as Google. My web history is disabled for Google, so the Google #2 results should be accurate.

I use Google Analytics for stats reporting.

Any ideas?
I know you will try to manage saying, they didn't check their ranking correctly, but that's not true. They chose a keyword considering the broad search count and failed miserably!

Let me put it in a simple way.

  1. Target a single keyword by seeing the exact search count - Claudiu
  2. Try to rank for other long tail keywords aka phrase keywords - Claudiu Sheep, Claudiu Attitude, Claudiu Brain e.t.c.,
  3. If you are planning to turn your site into a BIG authority site keep on adding QUALITY & UNIQUE content and gain authority. Once G0ogle sees your site as a BIG authority site and think your site is all about Claudiu, then you will rank for broad keywords - Hey Claudiu is not sheep!, Claudiu is having a good attitude, Claudiu is having a human brain seriously, e.t.c.,

PS I took Claudiu as keyword example above because I lost patience LOL.

This guy has been thanked 64 times?

Whoever took advice from him must be a millionaire by now.

What is the next step after KW Research? How exactly do I look at my competition and determine whether I can or can't beat them?

cyberzilla - Good post. Thanks for that.

As for the attitude towards Claudiu - Not nice. You started the mess with the facepalm trying to insult him. You shouldn't insult someone for not agreeing with you; I totally understand why he went emotional and attacked you (Not justified though).

To add something that, apparently I never saw mentioned here - The secret that PROFESSIONAL companies that do affiliate marketing use is that they don't bother with these tools for more than a few minutes.

If you want to perform a real keyword research and save money long-term, you have to use adwords and spend money.
That's the only way to determine which keyword actually has traffic. I own over 200 domains and I've tested almost everything I did - And there's a reason why professional companies run PPC campaigns BEFORE they spend a dime on SEO.

There was a big industry I went into and bought dozens of domains, setup sites and got traffic. A lot of traffic.
But there were 0 conversions and I couldn't push through the visitors; and then I've spoken with someone who OWNS an SEO company while his company was interested in the same industry. They did PPC, spent a few $XXX and decided to dump the idea within 3 weeks.

I've wasted $XXXX and 4-5 months with 0 ROI only because I was cheap on PPC AND THOUGHT I KNEW BETTER. Learn from others and don't criticize them believing you know better.

well said mate

I actually read this one in a SEO pdf from Daniel Tan.He mentioned that he used to do ppc campaigns for the exact keyword he is trying to rank through SEO.He runs the ad campaign for 3 to 5 days and scale up the amount of traffic he will get for that keyword if he ranks for the term.

Trick here is to bid high enough to be on the first page for the keyword i.e from #1 to # 7 google ads on first page so that you can calculate the no. of impressions it gets daily.

Bross, since you were talking about my attitude, would like to explain what happened . First, I never claim myself a guru. Whatever I learn, I just share to this community. I never said this is a complete A-Z keyword research guide. This thread is all about the mistakes which I made chasing wrong keywords when I was a newbie.

If you see the Claudi's first post, it was re-edited after few min..and the below part was posted after I posted the "Facepalm"

if the op feels i'm wrong, i'm very much open to a better explanation on his part. arguments that would make things more clear and will prove that i'm wrong on sticking to the broad search.

in others words, get your keywords by using the broad search. that's the searches the regular users do and that's the kind of users you are targeting.

I don't have any intention to insult anyone! If that guy posted this earlier, I would have not posted that. I'm not sure whether you read the other two posts by him. He insulted me calling "mister sheep", but still I took time to explain him clearly, but he never listed and vanished.

nice post cyberzilla, very good for new guys. ;)

I don't wanna get into this but, cyberzilla is a great guy, talked with him many times on skype and he knows what's he talking about. Just a small tip cyber: sometimes it's better to just let it go..

Claudiu: cyberzilla is right 100% about broad, exact, phrase and you are the one missunderstanding. The point is don't attack people around here even though you have a different opinion just state it and try to bring arguments, no point in calling him a "sheep brain"...

Hai frate sincer, ne facem de rusine, incepem cu insulte? Si ne miram ca toti zic ca romanii sunt de cacat si toti fug de noi. Chilleanu omule...

The post flow really smooth. I find it interesting. Thank you for some useful tips.
