i think you're making a confusion here. at least it doesn't make sense to me what you're saying.

the way i see things is google can show you 3 types of searches the users make:
1. broad search, which is for ex: buy backlinks
2. phrase, which is for ex: "buy backlinks"
3. exact search, which is for ex: [buy backlinks]

so all these options are the searches the users make w/ quotes and brackets.

on this principle, it makes no sense to go for the exact search, which is very much NOT used by anyone.
webmasters are most likely to know about it, but not regular users. and since you are targeting regular users, why go for the query that webmaster use ?!

since is very much NOT used by people, as most of us make the search by using simple queries, it makes no sense to go after the brackets search.

what the op is saying is like: hey, go for kwds that have high # of searches for intitle: buy backlinks ... lol ... who uses that, right ?... maybe webmasters, but not regular users .. so .. i say stick with the broad search. it makes more sense to go for that, rater than brackets. lol


I repeat, google is showing you the searches number for the keyword, in three different modes:
- simple query,
- qoutes query,
- brackets query.

I very much think you are spreading miss-information with this exact search thing.

So, be aware there newbies and advanced users as i think that the op doesn't make sense at all with his statement and i highly recommend you try to consider what i've just mentioned above.

if the op feels i'm wrong, i'm very much open to a better explanation on his part. arguments that would make things more clear and will prove that i'm wrong on sticking to the broad search.

in others words, get your keywords by using the broad search. that's the searches the regular users do and that's the kind of users you are targeting.

You totally misunderstood the concept and you should understand the real
difference between broad, phrase and exact search count

Broad Counts all the searches that include all the search terms, in any order and with any number of other words in between.

• fishing for a trout from a boat
• catch big trout by fishing
• trout for fishing

Phrase Counts searches that include the search terms in that order, with no other words in between but with any number of other words before or after.

trout fishing tips
trout fishing rods
place for trout fishing

Exact Counts only searches for that exact phrase, in that order and with no other words.

trout fishing

I want you to see the difference in the search count AGAIN. So in your point of view, no one do a search like [trout fishing] right? then why G0ogle is showing the search count as 9900 for [trout fishing]?? Are there 9900 webmasters searching for trout fishing? or Is G0ogle lying to us? LOL As you said no one search like [trout fishing]. Just to differentiate them and better
understanding, G0ogle is showing them along with symbol in the keyword tool.

Now come to the ranking part. Let's say you rank #1 for the keyword trout fishing and can you expect 9900 visits per month from Google? Answer is NO! that's what I explained in #2 Long Tail Keywords.

I hope now you realize your posts make no sense and don't talk about things which you don't have!

LOL, The palm to face was how I felt when I started marketing and had NO CLUE.

I did my inaccurate KW research, purchased a few domains, built sites, spent time and money on off-page SEO/SEM and ended up with traffic and income that made me sick to my stomach.
I almost gave up on my IM career at that point. But I realized there was so much I had to learn, and that I was doing SOMETHING wrong.

To me IM can be a humbling experience because there's so much to learn about so many topics. The key is to keep learning, doing, and learning from your mistakes which you will make.

That's just about what I'm doing now and I'm happy to read through your old post for better details. I agree, I often prefer doing my keyword research by hand but sometimes I just wanta be lazy, lol.

It depends on your ranking position in the first page and the exact search count. You can get a rough estimate based on the CTR. More info given here

Thanks for the thread man, this rocks. Let me ask you about local searches. Say I have a keyword:

London auto repair shop

Do I still do "exact" match when use G KT? And then just put all my combinations of it, such as

London auto repair shop
auto repair shop london
auto repair shop in london

But still do exact search for them?

So what I'm asking is exact match universal for local searches & I'm just responsible for my own combinations & longtails?

this proves how good at reading you are from adwords, yet failing to think logical.

i'll make it easier for you to understand, hopefully you'll get it.

adwords is defining what all the queries do by showing you examples of what each one does, and that's the examples you showed earlier.

Note! if your sheep head thinks that google will show you no of searches for variations of that kwd for broad search, well, guess again, it's not.


here's what you might be missing:
when 100 users make a broad search for buy balls, (which btw you might have a lot and that might explain why you have the sheep brain) google will show you that 100 searches have been made for the broad search. (ofcourse, it is possible that g will not show you the real searches and it might show you like 200 or 300, or something like that beacause they can do whatever they want on their home)

on the other hand, 50 users might make the search in quotes, and other 25 might make it in brackets. and if that's the case adw tool will show you 50 searches for the phrase and 25 for exact match.


now, why is exact match more important than broad search ?
well, it's NOT.

exact match, might show you, as studies have showed, that there is a better chance that people searching the exact match, will take action / will buy the stuff from your site.


so, should one only go for the exact match only?
absolutely freaking NOT

it would be silly of me to only consider the exact match when i can consider the broad and phrase which are very relevant to the searches been made.


if you're telling me you didn't get traffic to your website using the broad search it might have been at best, because at that time you targeted a low traffic kwd; something like 1k broad searches and you got a ranking in g at best in the 2nd / 3rd positions where the traffic is way more low than the 1st position.

it might have also happened that you didn't get traffic from the 1k broad search because you got a rank on 4th...to 10th or so positions, where the traffic chances are smaller, as very few users might make a click on them.

there is one more thing that might have happened. you might have gotten a sheep brain and failed to realize that traffic from g differs from one position to another

so if you targeted a kwd of 1k searches for broad query and got into a 6th position, the traffic might have been 4% * 1000 = 40 uv / month.

p.s my 1st post on this thread was not at all meant to show anyone how mr cutts i am, nor try to make the op feel lame. so, i'll take offensive the attitude prior to that post.

the idea was to underline that one should not go with just the exact match as it would be silly thing to NOT consider the other options available.

the exact match is an additional feature to predict the conversion rate. and it should be used in conjunction with the other options if one needs better and more accurate predictions for their traffic.

p.s 2 the attitude on this thread, following my topic, shows how cocky and immature some of the 'fellas' on this board can be when someone sees things in a different perspective as theirs.

With the quotes AND it is NOT showing may any results for people who typed this:
