This is why I Can`t have nice things.

So I needed my WP theme altered. Not a huge job. Color change and realign to fit an existing logo.

Went to Dp posted an ad got tons of responses.

This is the result.

Hahaha, that's gold. Anyway, I've found it's really hit-or-miss when hiring people from DP. I've had some really good work done for very cheap.

Unfortunately it seems you missed. It's frustrating just reading that.

Very painful to read....and a tad bit funny.

Plenty of guys on BHW that can handle jobs like that without the aggravation.

You're absolutely right. It's not that someone who is obviously speaking broken english may or may not be a good programmer, it's that they won't understand what you want. Then they won't leave you alone because they're confused.

This must have been a nightmare. You were very cool in giving him the $5.

At the point I realized he had no clue what I meant I figured $5 was a small price to pay to unload a clueless Indian I had just given my FTP credentials to.

I of course changed my FTP pasword..


I have had good luck on DP in the past.. but the last few attempts were huge misses. I looked on here for someone but I Can`t pay $300.00 for a $30.00 theme.

I felt your pain!! i had also problem like this with foreigner who speaks bad'o'english.
I tried to negotiate refund but it took almost a week to get him/her understand what was the situation lol...

jeez someone else told me about fiver and I meant to check it out and didnt.
I suppose the best solution would be for me to learn how to edit my ownt hemes but on top of VoiP linkwheels pyramids, etc etc etc I just can`t keep up with all of it..

@aeLED - Dazzler in no way tried to say non-native-English speakers are unethical or won't do good business.

What he's saying is that if someone can only speak broken English and you can't speak their language then it can sometimes be too hard to communicate clearly.

I know many members on this forum are from India, Europe, Asia, Russia, etc. that are not native English speakers, but they don't speak broken English either. You can tell they aren't native speakers, but they definately are fluent at the language. There's a difference between knowing a little bit of a second language and being able to effectively communicate in another language yet. People that speak broken English may be learning the language well, but they're a long way from being fluent. They're much further along than someone that doesn't know the language at all, but that doesn't mean they can communicate effectively.

Kudos to the guys that can even speak broken English. You're doing better than I am at learning foreign languages. They just need to understand their limitations, they aren't fluent at the language. There's still a long way to go from speaking broken English to becoming a fluent English speaker. It isn't a dig on anyone, it's just a fact about the progression of learning to speak additional languages.

For many things broken English may be sufficient, especially because English is a little more forgiving than a lot of other languages for grammar and syntax errors. But even so, small grammatical errors in any language including English can make the difference between saying something should be done one way, or it absolutely should not be done that way.

But considering that (everyday) English is probably the easiest language on Earth, it would benefit any freelancer if they put a bit of effort towards their communication skills. Also, written (everyday) language is way more unsophisticated than the oral form. The whole thread should be considered as a hint what a client would appreciate and not as a racist attack.

Besides, English is an official language in India so there seems to be some misunderstanding.

Well I don't think anything in the thread could be considered a racist attack. It's just about the problems with communicating between non-native language speakers. That's a universal problem regardless of which languages are being discussed.

The fact that English is an official language in India is also irrelevant. In Canada they have two official languages, English and French. Depending where you go in Canada you're likely to meet people that speak only French or only English. Not everyone there is bilingual even though officially the country is.

Even in the USA where English is the only official language you can meet many people that don't speak English. Actually English is only effectively the national language in the USA. It's basically just the default language that almost everyone speaks, there has never been an officially designated language in the USA.

The point is simply that speaking a broken language and being fluent in a language are two different things. Sometimes it can make the difference between conducting business effectively or not.
