The account was shared hosting with one WP blog installed on it at the time... not much damage you can do to a shared hosting account and a brand new WP theme. Scripts outbound links etc sure but I check for that after.

His English was not so bad when he responded to the job you are right. I actually do not mind broken English so much as the "yes I can do it" when they have no clue. No harm in the not knowing (If I knew I would do it myself) it's the saying you do when you don't part.

Ive had a few gigs done on fiverr this past week. I gotta say I am impressed with the site thus far.

You shouldn't have given a live (may be, also very important to you) website to a person (who, poor fellow, wasn't able to understand what you actually wanted to be done) --- didn't you thought about the risk/s to your entire site?

Did he bid $5 for the job and won it? Did you try to learn how competent he was by asking for references/portfolio/etc. And now....

I wouldn't give anyone my site's FTP details without having the trust factor built between us, but that's a different story.

Think over these things, my dear friend. You were indeed lucky and/but .... [don't want to say the word]!

Instead of blaming him for his broken English and possible inefficiency, thank him for not destroying your entire site, or for that matter, not putting some malicious code in it (intentionally or unintentionally, or even foolishly)... I don't think he would have done that in any case either... but you were lucky and, may be, not-so-clever too. I mean, why didn't you test him with a dummy site - a copy of your site - first and asked him to do the work first on localhost or something, then implement on your live site if everything was done to your satisfaction... there could be other such methods...

You, therefore, shouldn't be 'undressing' his shortcomings in this manner... you possibly were equally 'inept' if I may say so. Just my humble opinion.

P.S.: It actually took you only 7 minutes to send your FTP details to a newly acquainted/met 'web-designer'. You trusted rather quickly I would say. I hope you had thoroughly interviewed him (before these 7 minutes) to understand whether he was the right one to do the job.... I also suspect that during the "interview", he displayed a great command over his English language skills apart from his web designing skills (or else your job wouldn't have given a job to him that possibly required the FTP details to be transferred)... and you were then (before the 7 minutes) sufficiently sure that he was the right person...

Whom to blame?

Did you say you drive a cab? I of course have great respect for all professions. But surely, you don't allow any "mechanic" to handle your car's engine just because he "looks" like a mechanic. You go to a good reputable garage and get the engine repaired. In this case, you should've taken service of an efficient person (by testing his efficiency; I have given sufficient examples).

That's my point. You rather test someone before getting your job done -- there are ample good things to looks at while choosing someone to do a job - however small - for you. Again, you could have asked him to work on a copy of your site first. Also, when you are not aware of what some one could do to a site - like putting a malicious script which can cause widespread problems, especially on a shared hosting - so overall, you take sufficient precautions. A website should be equally important, however new or however seemingly unimportant. I still feel that you shouldn't have given the "one-sided undressing" ... sorry, my dear friend. It was just a bad experience for 2 good people, but only one person got humiliated.

You know the standard of DP workers, so you should've been extra cautious. That's my whole "argument", friendly of course.

P.S.: One good thing that you or anyone can do here >>> at least, when the other party begins using the "mobile language" (for example, "dat", "wat", "r u dere", etc.

, especially in a business conversation, put your foot firmly down and ask the person to convey his words / thoughts in a manner / language that you can understand, and throw out the "mobile slangs" -- it really kills the business relations

And may be this attitude alone would tell the other party to be extra-cautious, extra-efficient in your case, at least.

I threw you a positive rep also, merry christmas. this is actually a good thread for people that are looking to hire someone, because if they read this thread before hiring someone maybe it will make them think a little about talking to the person and making sure that they can do the job at hand. Also if it is hard to understand someone in the beginning it is probably best to not work with them.

I do have to disagree about the fact that american english is the easiest language in the world. Although I am born and raised american, I have attempted to learn other languages, and I have to say that every other language that I have tried to learn, follow the same kind of pattern and american english is totatlly different then any other language on this earth, therefor making it the most difficult. Just sayin...

Nah, it's not totally different, it's just really, really simplified Latin. For example the grammar associations still exist but they are irrelevant as the context is used to make sense and we put "the" and "a" here and there to make it clear when needed. You don't have to decide on different word endings when the word is in a nominative, dative, genitive, accusative or whatever case.

The English words don't even have real gender (with different grammatical considerations) like in most other languages, which makes things enormously easier.

The only problem for the non native non lazy speaker are the tenses. The rest is just vocabulary. I love this language. More so after battling with Russian which has 3 gender forms + 1 plural form and 7 cases. This means I have to consider 28 (4x7) things before being able to correctly say "I like steamy sausages" in Russian.

The fact is people who are wasting their time and money hiring freelancers who waste their time and money are as incompetent at hiring freelancers as the freelancers themselves are incompetent at doing their work.

There is not much of a difference between a freelancer who says they can do the work and fails to do so and a hirer who thinks he can go anywhere and get a freelancer to do the work he wants at the price he asked.

If you are jumping over to DP to cut down the cost, first understand the game and be prepared to weed out bad ones. It's a jungle over there.
