Depends what your looking to do with the site.
I just checked out a few screenshots of Thesis and I'm not really TOO impressed with it, though from what I've read it's real customizable and has a lot of great SEO options - though again I've never bought it or played around without so I'm sure I'm missing out on some features.
I usually belt out about 1 new website a week for one of my employers (all Wordpress based) so I had them buy me an account at ElegantThemes.com
They have a ton of great looking themes there that are fairly easy for the client to understand on the back-end when they have to update it.
Of course...with a little Googling you can find almost all of their themes somewhere online.
I pay the membership fee because I use their Support Forums for various issues I run into when customizing themes for clients.
It's like 40 bucks for a year and you can basically pay and download ALL OF THEM. But again the support is what I pay for.

I have the developer version of Thesis and I really like it! After understanding the concepts of hooks and filters there are basically no limits and the SEO is also very good and easily customizable.
However, I'd only suggest using Thesis if you have come sort of knowledge in CSS/HTML and PHP otherwise it's going to be some pain in the ass.
If you want a hassle-free solution I highly recommend SquareSpace. It's a monthly subscription but it's easy to set up and you get a great design at an instant. Or you can geek out if you want and customize it to your needs.
