Thrive Leads mate. Currently writing about our list building strategy and the plugins we use. However, almost always I write my own CSS, because I see imperfections and I can't tolerate that.

Depends on what factor you are targeting? For SEO you would think that PageSpeed Insights would be best considering that it comes from Google. However, you can use different coding techniques (usually CSS issues) that are better for your page, but still get lower scores in PageSpeed Insights. Even when looking at google documentation it states that if you are coding a certain way to ignore this rule and your coding is fine, but you will still receive a lower PageSpeed score nonetheless.
Since you are using WP I would check out https://gtmetrix.com/ It is my personal favorite and probably best tool for WP. Some people also use http://www.webpagetest.org/ but I am not a huge fan.
If I am looking at a potential clients website I will check all the above tools and link them to the site that shows the worst result so it may seem like there is more room for improvement, and if I land the client I will just make sure all 2 tools show positive results.

Spot on! GTmetrix is the bomb, but I like Pingdom as well - not so much for the speed improvement recommendations, but for the fact that I can test my website from servers from different continents.

Good post it looked like you where reading my mind as we do everything you are talking about... lol the only difference is we have a raid server setup in case a traffic spike that balances the load. Basically site can run on 2 servers at the same time serving the same content.
