The Complete NOOBZ Guide to Competitor Link Research!

Great Share OP. Its actually not for noobs, it can be help of many experts . (Who actually says, I am expert without people certified. ;) )

NIce guide thre, landed at this thread when i searched for SEOMOZ trial. Sames, the link is not working anymore. Can any one check for me? May is country limited?

I think they killed it a wile back I seen people mention it in another thread of mine.. I'll ask around and see what I can do.

I finally had time to read the thread, some good information. I often drop some of the best customer backlinks to link audit tool and keep a close eye on when they get removed. When one gets removed I instantly ask my team to get me few good links - usually this is enough to go up few spots.

Thanks for a awesome share:)

just st wondering for ahrefs, does it show the da/pa of the backlinks your competitors have??
i saw a screen shot and it had dr and pr in the collum listings. Is that the same thing(ahrefs version)

No it's not the same thing.. that's ahrefs attempt at their own metrics I believe. You would need a tool which combines and shows them all through API access, for example SERPWoo has all the data from ahrefs, moz, majestic and more built in.

If you're just starting, do you jump straight to competitor link research or do you do some basic link building before it?

I personally first build some Web 2.0s, then jump to social bookmarks, article submissions and blog comments, then start to build links to my Web 2.0s and then some good profile links and public blog networks and guest posting. All this around few months not few days to make it look more natural.

And after that I move to researching competitors links.

Is my "basic linknbuilding" worthless, should I just jump to competitor links, when talking about brand new website, any opinions?

Thanks for this helpful sharing dude! gonna apply a few of them with my upcoming projects. I hope not many of my competitors have read this thread :)

Thank you Tommy....

I use semrush to get competitor list domains.... get lots of them.

Then, I use cognitive SEO (Free trial, get 25 domain analysis),
it's a very good tool. give us how high the quality of the domain using TF/CF Majestic. They also categorize the backlink whether it is blog comment, forum, guest post etc.

Open link Profiler (cant post link), is also a very good link tool....

A perfect artivel before going deeper with your SEO projexts. This is a great and helpful share for us newbies. What a great way to analyze what our competitor is doing and making it better for your own project or website.

Thanks for sharing OP. This will surely help even though it involves manual work, it's worth it.

A perfect idea, this will really help me with my current task. Analyzing what your competitor is doing that makes them on top will give us an idea that we can apply on our own project then make some improvements and make it better.

Hi,

I have read all the White and Black sticky but this was the most helpful. However, I have some questions. Noob alert!

As this Guide was realized some time ago is it still mostly applicable or are there newer methods?

I went through all the Steps with Moz Toolbar and the Site Explorer. (No change for Ahrefs & Majestic, maybe Fiver)
Out of the 10 Links, 1 was Wikipedia and 4 did not show Links on Moz, 2 out of those were Forums. The default with the Site Explorer is Page. When I change to root, I do get links for those 4. Am I correct that for the rank, the Page is the direct competition not the Root, therefore that specific Page is only relevant. When I changed to Root, I went through the list, a lot of general stuff but there were 3 Links that had high DA/PA and were relevant to my niche, so I picked them up. That is OK?

Last, going through my list, I started trimming, first DA20 then PA30. Here again PA trumps DA? Because I had some 27-29PA->50+DA but I still get rid of them?

After the trimming, 3 links had 0 links, 1 had 1, and the others 5+. This is a good thing? I guess the 1 Page Sites are all weak except 1. Therefore it should be easier for me to Rank better, correct?

Again, thanks for the great Guide!

Thank you very much, Tommy !
i'll save the link to this post on a excel spreadsheet
